New trailer for No Mans Sky..

It looks ok in a cartoony way but to be honest. From what I've seen, it looks a bit simple in the controls and gameplay department. Reminds me of that old MDK game back in the 90's for some reason.

By using servers to host the universe just like FD is doing with ED.

I've been watching this a little bit and hope it makes PC and PS3 since mine is a glorified BluRay and Netflix box lol.

This looks promising for a different niche in the space sim arena and I hope its a blast. I look forward to trying it out.

It is well done, and all by PG as well. Prefer the look of ED rather than the more arcadish look of NMS, but might be tempted once it comes out on PC...

Servers are not needed for this. Michael Brookes also confirmed that servers are not needed for Elite, servers are merely used to track and propagate changes in Elite - and that is why they are required for the game...but they are not needed for the procedural generation.

Procedural generation is what is doing this. And that can be done on a lone computer / console - just has it has always been done on... :)

For example all of this is done without servers:

There are countless other games that use this technique too.

I'm will to bet that No Man's Sky won't be online only...

Pretty impressive. The only thing I'd like to see know is actual gameplay of just running around, because right now we don't know much.

ED has a cartoony look to it too, but that's to be expected, it's just renderings.

It does look cartoony, but nevertheless it gives me goosebumps and tickles my explorer bone. I love the strangeness of these worlds in NMS's trailers. They have great procedural creature generation. They really hit the nail on the head with their pg system.

If FD, with their graphics, can do something similar I would be a very, very happy gamer.

I do not like these small NMS planets and their paper thin atmospheres. It is so unrealistic that I makes me unable to suspend disbelief. It diminishes immersion for me. But perhaps I could get used to it.

This is the proper version of the new trailer:

Yeah, this stuff makes the old cobra engine look... old.

I agree. And it's one thing Elite: D has on its side. It's got great flight/combat mechanics. A thing that's easy to take for granted.

But I do love the 70s sci-fi paperback vibe of No Man's Sky!

The Earth's atmosphere is an extremely thin sheet of air extending from the surface of the Earth to the edge of space. The Earth is a sphere with a roughly 8000 mile diameter; the thickness of the atmosphere is about 60 miles. In this picture, taken from a spacecraft orbiting at 200 miles above the surface, we can see the atmosphere as the thin blue band between the surface and the blackness of space.

NMS is for me a firstperson spore game...It looks good ect but when i think about the limitation thanks to the console...meh no thanks so much potential wasted.

This game is looking better and better...
i am not sure about the gameplay because these trailer ...daaam are so short !!

but i think... that i will buy it with eyes closed

p.s. is it offline ??? :D

That's actually a good question and I'm not to sure about that.

It's suppose to have a shared galaxy with everyone else playing the game. A bit like a light version of what ED has. But in NMS it's going to be focused on exploration and resources of areas as I understand it. I guess you might be able to opt-out from that, but I haven't heard anything about that...

HOW ARE THEY DOING THIS?? (Fully fleshed out worlds)

They use a different kind of approach to graphics. As far as I know they use voxels instead of vertexes and as such there's no textures or anything like that. The game just calculates everything around you that you can see. It also scales down things that are far away in a very efficient manner. Sort of like how low-memory demos are made, you generate everything by algorithms rather than have it pre-generated and stored.

Here's an example of the advantages of generated graphics. Everything in this video is one 64k byte program (that's the same amount of memory as on an old Commodore 64 computer), including the music:

Somebody mentioned that this game relies on a server to work. I don't think that's right. This kind of game only needs a lot of processing power, which wouldn't work with a server-based solution, due to internet bandwidth being a drop in the ocean compared to the bus bandwidth on the PS4 hardware. For it to work on a server basis, your only option is to stream the graphics from a server, like a metaframe solution.

NMS looks very interesting. We've yet to see much gameplay or anything like that, though. I don't think that aspect will be particularly deep. But, I reserve the right to remain cautiously optimistic.
