Will we ever have more than 30 ships?

Cheers, and a follow up question.

There are Federation ships, and Empire ships, do the Alliance have their own specific ship designs or given their independent nature are they likely just to use Federation/Empire designs?

Right now the only faction specific ships are the Dropship and Courier, I was hoping the Alliance would get one of their own but I don't know.

I am sure they could create 1,000 more ships and thousands of mods to go with them to make it more realistic, but that would take ages to make. I think that 30 is just fine for now. There about that many in EVE when it came out. There will be expansions to come. Launch is not a fully made game where you land on planets, walk around, have FPS combat, nor should it be.

Star Citizen only has more if you count all the variants.
But even so, its a strange comparison to make since that won't be a real game for another 2 years.

I'd like to see them take some user submitted ships, I'm sure we have some skilled 3d modellers.

I'm not overly skilled at 3d modelling, it take me a age to model anything. But I would love to take part in a competition where the winner ship design get included in the game. An Frontiere being a British company I will actually be allow to take part unlike the STO ship design competition where non US citizens were banned from entering.

As to there being more than 30 I expect if E: D is successful they will keep adding to the ships. But me personally I want to see more capital ship designs for the fractions, I think there only one each, more variety of spaceports, I want space Docks. I want to see huge freighters and passenger liners, big mining vessels.

In a universe where the human race is capable of traversing the entire galaxy, it seems a bit ridiculous that you only have 30 ships to do it with. That would be like having only 30 different kinds of cars on planet Earth. I know making ships is very detailed and time consuming, and there are many other things to work on (exploreable ships/stations, planetary landing) but if it possible in the medium/far future the game will include more than 30 ships? Even Star Citizen, Elite's main rival, already has several times the amount of ships.

Eventually, there will be more and more, but many might not be flyable and be faction or species specific. As for rivals. I think SC is a very long way off release yet, even with their budget. Late 2016 I think. They also might have more ships, but I find their version of a galaxy very constraining to the point of a straightjacket, compared to Elite Dangerous.

Shok.

You can pretty much count on it since besides selling expansions, selling paint jobs will be their other source of income.

Today manufacturers join up to share development costs and release the same car with a different shell all the time. Toyota, Subaru and Scion. Ford and Mazda, Ford and Volvo etc, etc.

Creating unique ships is probably one of the most man hour intensive processes in the game. From written concept, drawn concepts, interior design (which is factored into every ED ship from the start) Then trying to make it all make sense, various reworks. Modeling, UV mapping, texturing. Laying out nodes and other hidden components the game interacts with to create gameplay, flight models etc.

It's a lot of work creating a ship, probably a good month for each one of a small to medium size, probably much more for something big.

I expect we will get a ship or two every few months, but they will also be migrating to future addon development. So I doubt ships will be the biggest priority for a while.

They used to back in the old Elite.

Gyr fighters, Saker fighters and Harriers were Alliance designs. Not sure if they will introduce them in this game yet.

Alioth and Gateway were in fact the center of ship development industry in the known space in the old games.

Over time, it'll just be a matter of priority, resourcing and perceived benefit. Same as any other addition to the game.

If there are obvious gaps in player the "ship progression" paths, I expect a very good case could be made for new ships to fill the gap. That would be a big ongoing gameplay benefit, for up-front dev/design cost.

Adding ships would also breathe new life into the game, which would be a benefit after it's been around for a while. Everyone loves a new toy or goal. :)

It'll just come down to priorities.

...and don't forget the individual sound design that comes with each ship.

Yes, that's a great idea. I do quite a lot of 3D modeling (not vehicles, though). Would be great to have such a competition.

+1
right one

I am sure that I could make something out of play dough :)

For now, even ten ships is going to be fine but do hope that we get a few more that 30 ships within 9 months, possibly more specialist ships that you can't upgrade that much for whatever reason like a mining ship that has a special new type of mining which is more efficient but you can't take out and replace with the usual hardpoint attachments or a small explorer ship that can take a huge engine for really big jumps but no cargo space.
