I don't mind that I have to be online to play solo... but I was kind of put off by the fact that my game whether solo or open play are the same game. I don't have a solo campaign so to speak... I don't have separate games solo and multiplayer. So basically... if I don't like getting blown up by players I can just play solo until I have the biggest baddest ship... and then go open world and start blowing people away with abandon (until I meet somebody who has done the same and has more skill). I think the game saves should have been completely separate and ships existing in solo play should not be usable in the open play universe.

Not at all.

I was in 2 minds whether to play SP or MP, but was always going to play online just for the more depth and dynamic universe.

The only people the decision should effect is people that cant play online for whatever reason. And thats a pretty small minority in 2014.

Anybody who can play online, but wont play because there is no offline. Not much sense there really.

Again, the OP like many others, has totally misunderstood the arguments for those wanting offline. Judging by the poll (which I haven't voted in because it makes no sense), he seems to believe it's all down to internet connections.

That was only part of the problem. Others included players being able to play their own game in their on time. With the ability to save their game and come back to it whenever they wanted without anything changing. In other words, an ordinary one player game.

Right now not at all, but i do fear the negative press the game got from the way it was handled (user and Frontier can take both take the blame on that) it will hurt sales, which hurts us all longterm. Ironically those complaining that they need an offline version in case Frontier stop supporting the game, may have helped that along.

I think some people forget we need Frontier to ship a lot of these games if we want longterm support, I know its a bad word but is all about making money Frontier are not a charity. For me they made the right decision if it was going to cost more money, they just handled it badly, but since I've been on this site (premium beta) I get the impression they don't like to share information about what they are doing other than some very short newsletters and cryptic messages at shows. They'll need to change this approach after to release.

The only difference between Solo online and Solo offline apart from connection,
is that you cant reload an earlier save to redo a mistake. Its a rolling autosave.
You wont be able to Mod.
The universe wont be static.

Otherwise its the exact same game.

No, what will make or break the game is the way others perceive it. If reviewers don't like it, then they'll say so. If other MMO players don't like it, then they will certainly say so.

No it isn't. By your own definition there, it clearly isn't.

It certainly is.

Or explain why you think its not, then I'll tell you why you are wrong :)

Why don't you read through the main threads on this. Or did you conveniently skip over the posts that tried to explain it to the blinkered offline haters?

Are we allowed to talk about this?

If so, I think the loss of offline was a huge blow for a number of reasons - the most important to me personally was that Elite was almost certain to attract an active and vibrant modding scene, and I was really looking forward to playing some of the things they came up with.

I have heard alot of complaints about connection issues being the cause, which is fair enough, unfortunate for them, sympathies and all that. Ive never heard a complaint and reasoning from people who are choosing to play offline even though they could play online, except the miss informed ones thinking it meant no single player.

What? You haven't read the posts in those threads have you?

I play the online game, but I would've liked to play my own single player offline version. Others wanted the game specifically for the single player game (and hopefully they'll get a refund). Just because there's a solo online option, doesn't mean that they should be satisfied with that. What they were expecting was something completely different. Something which had been promised to them.

I have no recollection of modding ever being on the cards - maybe I'm wrong?

I do not see how a game like Elite could possibly be enjoyed offline.
And yet the original game, Elite, was very enjoyable as an offline game. So were all the sequels. So is Oolite. Only now are we forced to play an online version.

Would you like to play Eve in single player?
Elite Dangerous is not Eve.

Sandbox, open world games and massive ones like Elite are a lot more interesting in Online.
In your opinion.

For what it's worth I have a great internet connection and yet I would prefer the option/choice to play offline. I am only interested in a solo game anyway, (because I'm old and boring). I would like my version of the universe to tick along at a different pace to the rest of you. I don't want to fail missions because 'real life' means I have to stop playing for a few hours/days/weeks. I'd rather not have all the nearby unexplored systems be thoroughly explored and mined-out while I was away in 'real life'. And I would really like an option to pause the game when I have to suddenly drop everything to deal with the doorbell/phone/dog/baby etc.

The lack of an offline mode affects me a bit. Given that I would ultimately like to team with others on-line play was always going to be my primary choice. That said I still fully expected to need offline mode at time if I wanted to be able to play, it would also have been useful for experimenting with things a bit. So all in all a loss for me but not as great as for others.

Depends what you mean - if there'd been an offline mode then there would have been mods with or without Frontier's support.

And they would have been glorious.
Yep, you would've had the usual Star Wars and Battlestar Gallactica ones, and perhaps a few unusual ones as well :)

That'll never happen now, though :(
