"Walking Around Ship Expansion"? I'm not waiting for that...Gonna go do it now...

MODS: Can you please leave this thread in the general forum - although it is VR content...a lot of people won't ever get to see what it is like to walk around ships in the games current form, and this will be a good opportunity for those without a Rift.

Like a lot of people I'm looking forward to being able to walk around my ship (though I'm looking forward to planetary landing a lot more :D ) That said, I'm pretty impatient for that sort of thing, so here's a video of me walking around inside my Cobra Mk3 bridge using my Oculus Rift DK2.

(And thanks to Catpain Kirk for his similar video back in October - it's one of the reasons that persuaded me to upgrade from my DK1).

You're welcome - why don't you use the second window method? Imho yields the better results when recording in the rift (managed to optimize it quite a bit since the video I linked, but didn't bother to make another one so far)

And since you were wondering about an extension cable in the video: I use one (1.5 m). Works fine for me, but I wouldn't go for a much longer one. And don't forget about buying a USB extension as well.

Pretty cool, even though I was silently hoping for some shattering glass, screeching cat or dull thud followed by involuntary swearing ;)

I'm pretty sure a lot of people would have found a video of me walking around with the Rift on pretty hilarious! :D

An addition 1.5m would be great! I hear that there are some significant limitations to the cameras range / field of view - but I'd like to test that out.

I didn't use the second window as for some reason after entering the relevant code, the window wouldn't appear. It's quite possible that I did something wrong though...I will try it again next time.

The cameras range is ok - not great, but got it working quite reliable at ~3 meters. Let me know if you encounter any specific problems.

Pretty sure the human brain is not designed to see such things.

The human brain is surprisingly adaptable ;)

I'd love to know how you got the second window up,,, I'm having a lot of trouble with direct mode as it just crashes as soon as I run any app, even the demo on the oculus config.

Gone though every driver. It's not hyperthreading as I have and AMD,, 4.04 rift config, works fine as a desktop extension.

I want to pull the trigger for a DK2 so bad right now but I keep hearing bad things about the resolution. The displays look blurry in this video as well.

It's not blurry in the rift, it just looks that way on a screen. The cockpit looks amazing with the headset on. The resolution is more noticeable with things far away. Even then it's not a problem.. just something that can obviously be improved a lot. The CV1 should be enough of an improvement to make a big difference in Elite.

I don't use direct mode (gives me terrible framerates). I just use extended and followed the directions in this thread.

Thanks for a great video I really enjoyed it and you did it at the right pace without violent movements or clipping through the ceiling. I hope you do another perhaps even in a different ship perhaps the lakons or the clipper?

Ok, thanks - I will give it a try for the next video.

Thank you... :)

It might be a while before I can do this in a Lakon as they are fairly expensive...but I will certainly make a video for other smaller ships soon. :)

Great - mission accomplished (that's all I made the video for: to have someone with an actual channel and talent to pick the idea up) - you have a new subscriber :).

Try sticking your head through the glass and looking behind the ship! ;)

The rear half of the ship doesn't have any texture on it!

The forward part doesn't either - I've had the wireframe skin equipped, but it only shows a bad res vesion of the default - long known bug
Considering standing up in general, I think it's a possible exploit and should be fixed. Didn't ticket it yet, but I will.

For the time being, it could be a nice way to record cockpitless footage (the fact that I was standing, use an aged computer and couldn't reach my pedals whilst being generally inept at flying spacehips made it the horsedung it is, but lots of opportunities there...
