Maybe i am missing something here but i dont think i have seen more than one other person.

Corect me if i am wrong but another player is called CMDR and their radar icon will be hollow.

I have been in the SOL system and am now heading towards the edge of the sprial arm and I think (not even sure) that I have only seen 1 other living pilot.

yes that is correct. or at least it was. last time i logged in i was able to select a pilot name, so now i don't know if CMDR is still there.
i would say that most players play solo to make money and only go into open world when they have a fully fitted ship to look for pvp. i would say especially now that they just did a wipe, most people are trying to build up their bank account in solo mode. give it a few weeks and everyone will have made a few millions credits and will be rolling around in open world looking to gank.

usually if you stay around starting areas, or around enter points of systems (stars), you'll find plenty of guys that try and gank you.
i've played for 3 weeks in open world and only seen a handful of players. most of them never even answered my messages. it's definitely not a crowded or very interactive universe....

So I'm guessing theres a few pre-defined starting areas? starting on the 16th with my kid, I'm wondering how hard its going to be to get into the same space.

Players currently start at one of the 10,000 Federation systems, picked at random. If you're grouped with another player before you create a commander, I've heard reports you might start near them. Otherwise, you want to grab an upgraded FSD and start flying towards a rendezvous point.
