Newbie first mission:Provide Food to the future of LHS 3447 in Trevithick Dock? How?

Hi guys,

Complete newbie here and starved of time, have had a search on this forum and google with no luck. My first attempts at missions have been hit and miss, I cannot tell if I completed any yet.

I spawned in LHS 3447 territory. First mission I accepted was to provide food to LHS 3447 at Trevithick Dock. I have managed to buy 4 units of Grain which fills my cargo capacity and made it to Trevithick Dock, which has no commodities market, and can't tell what to do now.

Should the mission be automatically completed as soon as I dock successfully, or do I need to do anything special? Is 'Grain' not the right kind of food?

I'm going to fly to somewhere with a market, and sell this Grain, as I cannot see what to do now. Very frustrating, I am really loving the Elite Dangerous experience but this has me stumped. Anyone else in this position?

Thanks
Nick

Hi Nick,

Grain could be the right type of food. The details of which food you have to supply is mentioned in the mission briefing (you can access the mission details anytime via the left panel). When arriving at the station, you just have to visit the bulletin again and chose your mission. If you have the right type of food, you can choose "give cargo" and voila - you receive the credits for your hard work!

Keep on trying. ED has a quite steep learning curve but in my opinion its worth every minute...

Regards,

Martin (CMDR Globo Mong)

I generally steer clear of those "Take mission first, then bring goods to station". They are probably decent, but it requires you know where to obtain the items (and preferably at a low price).

As Junka said though, you can review all your active missions via the left hand panel (#1 key) and switch to the Transactions tab. There you can scroll through the missions and open them up to read details. It should list specifically what type of food item you need to bring back. The missions are very picky... they don't want just "food", they want a particular commodity found under the Food category in market.

Most commonly they ask for Grain, Fish, Animal Meat or Food Cartridges.

All missions from bulletin board are completed by opening up the bulletin board (provided that you are at the correct station, e.g. drop-off point) and finding your active mission in the list (usually at the very top).

Off-topic question.

Can you steal cargo (read: pirate) from other ships and use that cargo to complete those "Bring us X amount of Y item" missions?

A lot cheaper to borrow the cargo from someone else rather than pay for it yourself :p

I find myself in the total opposite position Red Fox Four - those missions typically have VERY long timers so you can pick up a number of them and do a tour of 5-10 systems picking up low price items as you go and handing them in when you get back to the original station, they're often quite lucrative!

Typically no as the cargo will be flagged as Stolen. There are however missions (usually in Anarchy systems and dodgy Pirate outposts) that specifically ask for Stolen goods.

BULLETIN BOARD

then

GIVE CARGO

for a mission u dont have to go to the commodities tab. im in the same area. PM me if u have any other questions. I dont go to that system because the SC to the station is to long. i thunk its 100,000 ls or something outrageous.

If u still have the cargo it will be stolen once the mission time runs out which is around 2-8 hrs, normally. ur only choice now is to sell it on the black market which in under CONTACTS.

Can anybody anwser if u get fines bringing stolen goods into stations in NON-anarchy systems if ur scanned????? If so, ur best bet is just to jettison the cargo and start over as anarchy systems r very dangerous and ur prob to new to try and get into a station without being scanned. U either have to race in very fast and risk crashing or go in silent which is hard for new players.

Thanks, turns out they wanted Coffee, of course!

Thank you to all who replied, all very useful responses. Turns out the mission states 'COFFEE' which is surprising given it was a "Help us we are dying we just need food" kind of request. Funny stuff.

Very glad for the mentions of 'GIVE CARGO', not just sell it on the commodities market. I could easily have sold it and not known what I did wrong.

I checked this morning, 9 hours remaining on the mission. Under Missions it says "you have failed to complete this mission", I don't know if that means it's pointless to keep trying, or simply that I haven't completed it yet.

I left Gamma 2.0 downloading and left for work, hope to find time this evening. 2 kids now, game time is hard to come by.

What's the "SC" to the destination? Is this to do with how far you have to travel once in-system to get to the station? I don't fully understand that stuff yet, certainly when I jump into LHS 3447 it seems to be a long trip to a station, like Trevithick Dock. I seem to have to get into Frameshift drive to get going quickly, stick speed as high as possible, and wait about 2 minutes as the distance closes and my speed is automatically slowed down, which is a bit annoying. As you get close it's important to try to slow to something sensible, and when you're very close to the target (and perhaps slow enough) you'll see a blue message about "safe to drop out of Frameshift now", and if you hit 'J' to drop, it will magically drop you about 10Km from the target station, no matter how far you were when you actually hit J. A bit disconcerting.

Thanks all!
Nick

Majority of the missions are not worth the creds, but with the addition of reputation you are forced to. But if gamma is anything like the beta builds, once you get a few thousand creds you will probably start trading since its the only way to reliably assure you get what you want as fast as possible.

I shoot for the 8 second mark when supercruising. From my experience that is the quickest you can go without overshooting. You will most likely get slowdown warnings, but ignore them. Lol

Agree on all points Don_Von_Hulio. Ah 'SC' = 'Supercruise'. Thanks for the 8s tip, always good to know I'm on the right track, had a similar thing in mind. I remember Frontier which used to just hurtle you at the destination and magically stop you despite you going full speed a moment ago; not so with E : D fortunately. Will see how I go with creds and markets, I might team up with a friend soon and do some bounty missions, no idea how that's going to go with more than one player taking the kill on.

It strikes me, my questions were probably answered in a manual or online FAQ, I see sticky threads on this forum that sound like that, but the experience so far has been:
- offered client installer in an email
- install and play as fast as humanly possible
- joy and regret in equal measure

:D

In order to complete the mission, you have to go to "Starport Services" once you are docked, and then to the bulletin board (ie where you originally found and accepted the mission), select the mission from there (should be highlighted in yellow), then select "Give Cargo".
It's frustrating, you can see the mission in the left hand panel, you can see the cargo you need to complete the mission in the right hand panel, but in neither location can you complete the mission. It's not exactly intuitive. Took me a few attempts to work out how to do it (I'm a newbie too, just completed my first mission).

I had the same experience but once you know it, it is easy to get to that panel. My biggest prob is/was accepting the random ''help me I need TEA...<enter random cargo here>..'' and then realising there is NOWHERE within a 100 ly with that product....aaaaaagh. MISSION FAILED every time. Spent one hour last night looking for Agricultural planet looking for Tea, then stopped and went...why am I not flying or shooting things or playing?

I was playing! I found out how to search systems by sorting their allegiance/economy etc...I did learn that. So did you with the mission completion thing. So THAT won't happen again :)
learning curve....

Learn power management lol. I bought 3 new guns and discovered I didn't have the power supply to cover the demand..my ship lost all power on the 1st attack when I deployed the guns...liddle dwuk ina water....won't do that again :)

happy hunting folks!
