In a perfect world, how would you like to interact with other players?

This is a very difficult question. On one hand, I like realism and would like to _live_ in a universe where everything can happen. On the other, I know that there will be people who will treat Elite4 as merely a game and will engage in behavior that will ruin the immersion for other players.

What decides it for me, however, is that if I can choose the company in which I play - not play in the "all" group, that is - I would go for full realism. I just need to find a group of like-minded people who like to roleplay the characters that they choose to be - be it a pirate or a peaceful trader.

So basically creating PVE and PVP only divides the population in four? Bad idea IMO. Most MMO's are forced to merge servers eventually.

No, 3. IronMan wouldn't have a PvE mode... it's IRONMAN! :p

It's not an MMO... but anyway, how many merge to less than 3?! They must be really niche games to go THAT low. In any case, you'll lose population playing in private groups and solo online anyway so why care?

Gotcha its IRONMAN :)

I will be out of Ironman so fast... Before I will be able to engage in pvp I will already have died several times by some frenzy NPC pack or hitting a spacestation when docking :p

[1] I can attack anyone at any time, just like everyone else : Selfish.
[2] There are some areas of the galaxy where I cannot be attacked by other players : Unrealistic.
[3] I can move between one of two groups: a PvE group or a PVP group : Reasonable.
[4] I must pick and stay in one of two groups: a PvE group or a PVP group : Also reasonable.
[5] I cannot attack anyone else, and they can't attack me : Pointless.

Selected option 3.

The fact that not all players will be in the same instance means that not all players are available for other players to attack at will anyway - instances are finite.

The idea that players whose preference is PvP will be in some way disadvantaged by reduced numbers of opponents, consider that (as has already been pointed out) those who *don't* want PvP would probably prefer to play in SP mode rather than be forced to play PvP.

If a player *really* does not want to suffer the unwanted predatory / parasitical behaviour of other players then why should they be forced to play in isolation or in small groups?

As has also been pointed out, the IronMan group will be kept separate from the PvP group. Are the PvP (non-IronMan) group as upset by this as by the proposal to allow PvE players to be kept similarly separate?

I would suggest that the PvE mode does not mean that a player will not suffer damage if fired upon by another player - rather that the attacker will be in some way excluded from the PvE group for a period of time and only be allowed to play in the PvP group until the ban duration (in in-game time) is finished.

I would also suggest that repeat offenders be banned from the PvE group for longer periods for each infringement.

Will this never end???

For the record I've gone for the first option in each poll. I think that REALISM is something that the game needs, and the most realistic option is that ANYONE can shoot at ANYONE. The punishments are the deterrent here, but the realism of the situation is that if someone wants to shoot at someone then they will.

Realism? Then let's get REALISM!
Realism means that you get one life, PERIOD! Your account shall never support more than one, "once dead always dead" character. Once you die, you have to buy new account. Actually, scrap that, it is not realistic. You can only ever buy one account, make one character and when it bites the dust... Bye bye.

What? Not fun? That is the point! Realism always comes second to fun. Let's never forget that.

And whole lot of people, like me, prefer fun without widespread antisocial and nearly sociopathic behaviour EVERY PvP society brings with it.

If this group is forced to PvP, they rather play solo.
Solo means no money for Frontier.
No money means no upkeep.
No upkeep means... No game.

Better in my opinion to have option for moving between PvE and PvP environments and maximise the population who are willing to play the game. Because with SC coming up, it is going to be really contested environment.

Not having a PvE option will likely be worse for bringing players together.

If there are PvP and PvE options, a large part of the PvE players will likely be playing in the large PvE group, enjoying the multiplayer experience. Even a part of the players inclined to stick to single player might instead choose the PvE group.

If there is no PvE option, though, those PvE players won't be playing in the PvP group; they will, for the most part, be playing solo, in private groups, or even offline.

So, not offering a PvE option will most likely mean less total players playing with others.

Went with the have two groups option, however, I feel that there SHOULD be areas in the universe where you can't attack newbie players.

Or at the very least have STRONG police presence in certain areas so that PVP is discouraged in the 'starter' systems.

I don't really like multiplayer, but imho the groups option would work the best, have players who want PVP 'flag' themselves as PVP, and then they can go about attacking each other.

Coop should be an option, but not forcibly so. I think that two players agreeing to watch each others backs, or a group of friends flying about and raising trouble should be more spontaneous... less mandatory.

Just my 2 credits.

You're on the money there OneoftheLost - however unless things have changed during the KS campaign FD said that new players would indeed start in a sectioned off area containing some worlds to introduce them to the game and they would need to save up and upgrade their engines to escape.

I would imagine if true that this would be a one way trip - ie - once you leave you can't go back.

Because ED gives the option of solo play and private group play, I vote one. I am useless at PvP but given the above a meta-split is not necessary imo. However I would be content with any of options 1 to 4.

I've said my piece on PvE / PvP many times, and others have done so more eloquently than I already in this thread. But I'd better throw my hat into the ring once more.

I voted 4 "I must pick and stay in one of two groups: a PvE group or a PVP group". I've advocated a proper PvE mode for a long time, but also think that letting you hop between PvE and PvP will breed resentment (justly) amongst the PvP players that the PvE mode is used to get easy credits / etc and unfair to then use that commander in the PvP mode.

Basically, I believe what's needed is, at commander creation, you choose PvE or PvP and that determines which "All" group you end up in. The PvE version just has all player-to-player damage disabled.

I don't see this would disadvantage any player preferences at all - PvPers get what they want (the game as it stands), PvEers get what they want. Ok the developers get a bit more work, sorry... :p

I should add (and with the greatest of respect to all forum members) while I understand the ******** fraternity ******* upset at PvP, it should be remembered that Elite as a concept lends itself so well to an open universe.

If that's an example of the attitude I'll get in PvP, I'm even more for a PvE option now!

Disappointed given my prefix of "greatest respect" however, the attitude behind the post is one of genuine gumption relating to Elite being all it can be in terms of concept and delivery.

In any case, I feel the development team at Frontier know their eggs and will create a balanced environment that all can enjoy, including those that would hit the escape pod release button at the first sign of an ol' Cobra mark III with a beam laser and a fuel scoop.

Yeah, no. PvE players simply do not wish to engage in combat with other human players. That's it.

Absolutely nothing to do with what you said.

Oooh! You're mean and tough. Must have things to prove.

I just don't know how to respond to that.

I get the feeling that the "adverse to PvP" crowd are genuinely concerned as to the multiplayer aspects of Elite.

Peace bra.

Nope.... I just wanted a game about cooperation and story - Basically If there is no PVE mode I'll happily kill you if you attack me....

I just would rather not make the game exclusively about killing.... BUT I came to the conclusion that any hopes I had for an MMO style game went out of the window - this will be TF2 in space - ok fine - I'm highly ranked on that I'll just kill my way to Elite (Ok Dangerous cos I'll get bored and TF2 is much better) and **** the bounties....

I care little for where this game is heading now - the majority want COD/TF2 in space - fine - that's what you're getting. You can dress it up with trading in the crippled predicable (yet unexploitable) economy, and gearing up your 50 ships, but basically this game is an FPS.
