Community Event / Creation Marcan Rayger Frontier/Elite fan-fics revisited

Many, many moons ago, back in 1999 and 2000, I was rather an active participant of alt.fan.elite and other ancient discussion groups and wrote a series of Marcan Rayger fan-fic stories set in Elite/Frontier universe (more Frontier, but with elements from Elite thrown in).

Now, as a result of Davidtq recognizing my name and reminding me of my own past exploits, I'm revisiting these novellas and giving them a small facelift (only grammar corrections etc. - no complete rewrites). Two are done, three more are in the works.

So, please, if you feel so inclined, visit my site and give them a look:

Or, alternatively, get them at Goodreads:

Im going to jump in here and highly recommend giving this series a go. It really is a great story line that gets better as it goes along. Ive read a lot of Elite fan fiction and this is my favourite.

Yes, Kindle for PC is the simplest choice. Calibre also works and it is a great tool to convert books to other formats as well.

Special thanks to Davidtq for persuading me to reread my old stuff (believe me, I was not too eager to try) and Mobius for the covers! :)

Sorry about that, I've been distracted by my stupid day job. The third part is at the proof-reader (should check on it, actually) and I've been slowly working on the fourth part. :)

In the meanwhile, I would love to get some feedback. Don't worry about hurting my feelings - this is 12-year-old stuff, after all, and basically written by "another person".

When I've finished reading my current book I'll check out your Marcan Rayger stories, already downloaded the first to my Kindle. Very cool name, and I'm looking forward to reading them! I'll give you some balanced feedback afterwards... :)

Just an update about this: I just started going through the third "book" again (the first round was a bit too "kind" to the original text) and it should be out in a week or two if there are no surprises on the way. It will be changed more from the original than the two previous books were. This third part was the weakest originally (IMO) and I hope to improve it to fit better with the rests of the stories by removing some bad plot elements and descriptions as well as by introducing new ideas and sub-plots.

But, again, this is not a complete rewrite, just "an improvement".

Thanks for keeping us up to date. I have some fond memories of Marcan Raygar from back in the day. It'll be good to see him back in action once more.

Very cool name
Thanks, I always did like it as well. :) I have no recollection how I came up with it, however (well, the first name is obviously a *******ization (oh, my - well an "illegitimatization" then?) of my own name, but the family name is a mystery).

Thanks! It is a strange feeling to return to the character all these years later and actually find people who read the stories back in the day! Heartwarming might be a term that comes close to how I feel about that. :)

The third part of the series is now downloadable at the main site (link in sig). I'll get it up on Goodreads as well as soon as possible.

For anyone who read the earlier version over the past 10-15 years, some of the story elements have been changed quite a lot (and even removed) while others have been introduced in their stead. This was mainly done to remove some of the ridiculous coincidences that the story began to get burdened with. Also, the language has been tidied up and improved a lot - there are probably still some annoyances left and I hope you'll excuse me for those (I did not rewrite the story, merely edited it heavily).

Again, any feedback is welcome, even if it is negative. :)

And thanks go to Mobius for the cover - as usual! :)

I look forward to hearing your feedback, Bingo! :)

For a bit of fun (and since someone asked), I recorded a sound clip of how Marcan Rayger pronounces some of the planet/system names in the Elite universe. See if you can recognise them from this sound bite!

Fileden did not work out (very limited bandwidth), uploaded to Youtube instead.

The fourth part is now available both at Goodreads and at the official site. Some of the main plotlines reach their climax here and we finally learn more about Castor the AI and his mysterious "brother" - and some extra details are devealed what might actually have happened aboard Professor Bardoff's Boa all those years ago...

Goodreads presently carries only the ePub format (I've mailed a question to support, but they apparently take their time answering questions). The official site also has the goods for Kindle and other .mobi format users out there:

Reading the first now. Will get back to you whenever I manage to finish it.

I have to say, the story is quite good, but the grammatical errors are a bit distracting. The sentence structure also feels very odd. The plot is moving at a quick pace, and is certainly holding my interest, as well as the realistic characters.

Yes, the problem with the grammar / sentence structure lies in the fact that I did not wish to rewrite the entire thing. My English was not that great back in 1999/2000 and I wrote the stories in a hurry (when I should have been writing my master's thesis). Believe me, I fixed up some bad ones while I was editing it for republication. I would appreciate any pointers and feedback on the errors that you find - if they are not simply too numerous to list.

I _hope_ that the first story suffers from more mistakes than the later ones (my editing went a bit deeper with the later ones).

You can send any such notes to me at elite @ susimetsa . net
