Hardware & Technical Good places to buy PCs / components

This is for sharing links, resources, etc on where to find the best PCs and components for the right price.

Personally I use EBuyer for various components:

http://www.ebuyer.com/

Good for getting really expert user reviews on various small components, different graphics cards, etc. Also does a good price on monitors.

For whole systems put together (when I'm feeling lazy) I've yet to see an equal to DinoPC:

http://www.dinopc.com/

The best part is the ultra-detailed customisation, including the option to not have it come with an operating system. Price-wise they come out cheaper than building it yourself a lot of the time. I've had a few friends get PCs from there and they've all had good service.

For laptops I tend to look for good deals on the likes of PCWorld. Lenovo have been the best manufacturer for price lately, and do laptops with numpads, though I've never tried a high-end laptop from them.

Any other recommendations?

Been using Scan for years - fast delivery and really good RMA service from them.

If you sign up to AVForums or Hexus you get free shipping also (I think one of them is a discount, the other makes it free but cannot remember which is which... and that was a while ago so maybe it's changed anyway)

In a lot of ways it depends on where you live. When I built my nephew computer I went to about 15 different places.

I found bearbone setup. Which give you a cpu, Motherboard & Ram. I think I grab that at Directron.com Then grab the case at Frys eletronic. The hard drive at Best buy. A few things at Circuit City when they still had stores.

For self-build PCs, I buy most of my components from Ebuyer, though with a bit of shopping around. Their review system used to be good, but nowadays is junk, as they've moved to an aggregate service called 'reevoo'.

One thing I keep forgetting that we are in different countries.

Yes, I have tried to look for a barebones laptop chassis in the UK (with reference to your earlier post) but have had no luck in finding one.

I think you can get them in the US but that's a bit far to post for me!

I think this thread is splitting into two camps, local PC shops that give great service and online stores that give you cheap parts.

My preference would be the local option where available as you cant beat it for service no matter how good your returns dept. is.

on returns Scan wins hands down but they need too as they tend to send out one or two DOA products, I had a PSU from them that turned up dead not long ago and even with a bankholiday weekend in middle it only took 6 days between contacting them to book the RMA and getting the replacement back.

Scan also do well when it comes to delivery as they use the predict service from DPD to give you a one hour delivery window on the day and the system is so well integrated that should you miss a delivery you will have an email within about 5 minutes to inform you the courier called.

one trick i will pass on though is to shop around even once you decide on a store to use, the last thing i bought from scan was a 4 bay raid cage and i managed to save myself a tenner on it by getting it from the official Scan computers Ebay shop instead of directly from their site - even the postage was 1p cheaper ;)

For components, I find ebuyer to be pretty good, both price-wise and customer support.
For pre-built and built-to-spec PCs, pcspecialist is hard to beat.

I'm not sure I like this thread - it may be hazardous to the wallet.

I'm looking on all the recommended sites and keep clicking options which is taking my predicted budget of X to X x 2!

Need a reality check...

It's Scan for me too mostly..
I also check ebuyer and Overclockers.co.uk prices too.
Not sure why anyone would buy pre-built.. That's half the fun!

Have a look at the razer gaming laptop (drool...)

Yes, they are cool but the screen is a bit small for me. Although I am getting a laptop it is going you stay mostly in the house so does not need to be that portable. With the advent of a 2nd child I no longer have room for a desktop so need a laptop to save space.

I hope to connect it up to the tv, reckon the game will look good on a big screen!
