How much of the Elite galaxy is Inhabited?

Is there any information on which general areas of the galaxy is inhabited by humans?
Is it just a small sphere around Sol that's inhabited and then just empty space (and potential aliens =D)? Or are there other inhabited "areas" further away?

It would be really great to have a zoomed out map of the galaxy with some colouring where known human settlements are =)

It's populated pretty far out. You can deselect the faction types in the Galaxy map, or slide the population slider to see and move outwards from the center.

I was on the very edge of populated space, but came in a bit more to raise a faction :p

Yeah it's a huge galaxy!
But apart from the "sphere" around Sol, are the other inhabited systems just randomly spread out or are there other "centres" elsewhere?

For example: Are there any chance at all to find human settlements/outposts on the other side of the galaxy?

Want to know if there is some system far away you can pilgrimage to =)

There's no reason why not. A small group of explorers might have buggered off in search of a new life and set up home on the other side of the Galaxy. Finding them might be a bit tricky, unless of course you just happen to come across an old artefact in floating about in space hinting at where they might have gone.

That would be a brilliant mission!

Of course, if you were to find them, they might not be that pleased with you...

Yeah I guess it wouldn't be that unlikely since you can get there yourself.

More old artefacts to the CMDRs! =)

Hmm, I'm not sure I would like that in the game.

I'd rather have the galaxy evolve based on the general actions of players, but still somewhat controlled by FD.
I quite like the idea I read somewhere that an uninhabited system may get an outpost if the player traffic is high enough.

So is uninhabited space empty then, i.e. you meet no NPCs and there are no stations when you venture far enough out? And is the transition well handled, i.e. the number of NPC ships and station drops the farther you move out? Do you meet different kinds of NPCs in depending on how central or peripheral a system is?

Besides, more ways to interact with the game would be very nice. Doesn't need be founding a colony, but it would be great if you could interact with a NPCs in a system in such a way that it feels like you are making a meaningful difference. Does a system get more developed when you trade with them? Does it get safer when you kill pirates?

By exploring the frontier and the unexplored areas, I can tell that stations seems to disapear gradually. The farthest systems are all independants. Also, since there is little traffic, they accumulate all their stock, making them great places for shopping for parts and commodities.

Just out of curiosity, how far below gal. average are the commodity prices on those stations?
