General / Off-Topic Excuse my ignorance but...

Thank you Sounder. What is that though? IS it like solo play or something?

It means it's you vs the general game environment, which includes computer controlled players etc. As opposed to 'PVP' which is 'player vs player' (real human players).

The reason I ask is I see a lot of PVE stuff in people's signatures like 'Mobious' and stuff like that and I wondered what it is...

Möbius is a forum member who created a group called Möbius for like minded players not wanting to kill/be killed by human players.

He also produces some of the best sig banners I've ever seen.

Top bloke.

So that is a kind of room where you can play ED but have interaction with other players but not get killed?

In essence, yes. But you may be killed by a NPC. (Non Player Character)

The thing to note is that human players all have the word CMDR in front of their name. Computer generated characters don't.

See my sig.

NPCs have odd names like 'Snotty Herbert' and such. Some are very funny.

Yes I am aware of the CMDR thing but why the need for a room where (I assume) other CMDRs meet up? Why not just do open play? What is the differences or benefits of a PvE as opposed to the straight open play? They seem one and the same in what they offer to me. I must be missing something here.

In open play you are fresh meat to other real human players. In Mobius you are not. In every other way, the game is the same.
I don't really see what there is to miss?

PvE player versus Environment
PvP Player versus Player. (Open play)

So then there is an agreement by the mobius players not to attack each other? Is there a common cause or are the Mobius players working towards a common goal then? Will they come into the open play at any time or are they locked in there (through choice of course) for good? This is all ery interesting to me. Thank you for answering my questions Ulysses...

PvE group is essentially the same as Open in terms of what you get. The difference is with a PvE group that all the players in the environment have agreed not to attack each other, only the "Environment" (NPCs).

Benefits - co-op play without fear of being doublecrossed/ambushed or otherwise killed by fellow players.

Cons - Loss of the frisson/excitement of how an encounter with another player is going to unfold (only a Con if that excitement is an enjoyable element for you).

Reality - while groups like Mobius' have Teamspeak or similar voice comms to permit chatting, actual in game encounters are still rare (player population small/galaxy big), unless said players actively decide to arrange to meet up at a specific location (via external voice comms). The chance of (player) encounter is higher in Open play (though it's arguable how much higher) because there are relatively more pilots in the Open environment (at least in theory).

Hope this helps. :)

No problem.

I don't think there is a common cause, or goal. At the moment I'm in a remote system miles from anyone. But I do know that if I were to meet up with another player in the group I won't be attacked by them. In fact I expect they would help out if I were in trouble. I would do this for them too.
