wow..... super sampling is unreal...

Got my OR today. At first I was blown away.... but not massively. The resolution wasn't great and while cool, I was not as impressed as I thought I would be. I looked into super sampling with my card 970gtx and tried it out..... its amazing. Very clear, easily readable... it's like I'm there. Just out of this world awesome.

If your rig can handle it, try it out.... it's like going from looking through a hazy window and a screen to looking through nothing at all.

The only thing that sucks is the motion sickness and dizziness. That hits me hard after about 5 minutes of playing. Suppose I'll get use to it.

If your on the fence abour OR DK2.... jump in. It's the most unreal experience I've ever had in my 27 years on the planet.

Yeah I got the DK2 + 970. You'll get progressively longer periods of play. Saturday I played 5-8 hours straight and yesterday 4-6 with the spinning ship issue!!

The first time I used the rift I could only handle it for 10 minutes before I felt sick.......well, I was trying the rollercoasters so that didn't really help :D

After a week or so of use occasionally now I can easily go for 4-5 hours sickness free. Therefore, more time flying in elite!

You'll get past it eventually.

The question is are you locked at 75 FPS with supersampling at all times or does it drop below 75 FPS on occations.
If the answer is it drops sometimes you know why you feel nauseous.
You should not have nausea with elite in the rift. It is one of the least nausea inducing games on the market.

That being said everyone is different. Maybe you are getting nauseous easily.

I tried an oculus at a friends who has an old card. It was very low res compared to my 4K rig but man was it immersive. I seemed to handle it fine until I came into the station and the pad was down the back and up top. I instinctively did an aileron roll as I came in through the slot and nearly threw up on the console hehe (sorry for being so graphic). The feeling of vertigo hit me instantly.
Anyway I am borrowing his DK2 this weekend. I have dual 980gtx. So I look forward to trying it with super sampling.

As you said there are other reasons for getting nausea for me its my eyes telling my brain we are rolling but my inner ear says nope all steady. For example I cant read in a car if someone is driving down a winding road. And as I posted above, the aileron roll in the station got me. I am hoping to try and practice in short bursts and build an immunity.

Its not a good look when a passenger walks onto the bridge of your ship and the captain has his head in a bucket yelling "let me die.. oh let me die'

Yep, generally I can play Elite for many, many hours, but rolling especially in a station to line up landing path is still very unpleasent. I think i'm slowly getting used to it and its the only thing that bothers me.

However as to the OP I have to wonder, on my GTX970 there is no way I can run SSAA or DSR without framerate (in stations) dropping below 75Hz, its just pushing the card too far. However it is close to 75Hz, but I actually find that to be a worse and produce a more unpleasant feeling in the rift, where as I had no such issues using my old GTX465. Of course with the GTX465 I couldn't manage more than 30 fps in stations, but the fact it was so far off just made it very jerky which I found easier to deal with than almost 75Hz. I gues it really comes down to personal preference.

.

Low persistence not working , you are having nice graphics but low fps and maybe also running 60hz.
Normally in the 75hz zone even running 60fps and with a bit of judder you don't feel that sick after short time.
You are lucky that you are new, you have a ton of info in this forum and else where.

How different is the super-samplping experience compared to using SSMA?

I'd been informed that they were for all intents and purposes the same thing so I hadn't tried SS via the nvidia driver. I'm a bit reluctant to go messing about as I've got it running really well with mostly highest settings on mt OC 970 at the moment.

Bonus (slightly unrelated) question - Has direct mode been fixed yet so it can run in 75hz with low persistence or is it still stuck at 60hz and blurry? (not a big deal for me as extended works great 100% of the time)

Haha! :D True that.

I too cannot read in a car on winding roads so no worries.
Doing rolls in stations does throw me off balance as well. The difference is that i got used to it. It throws me off but doesn't make me feels sick. Getting your VR legs so to speak - it gets better.

For some it is easier then others though. Half life 2 at full walking speed makes me feel like what you said above! ;)
Some people claim it doesn't affect them at all. That's not good either though because those people usually also complain that they don't feel immersed at all. Makes sense. If you don't fool your body in way it thinks it is "in there" you wont get sick. You wont get the positive experience of it either though.

I've found it even varies from game to game. E:D can pretty much play as long as I like, but have to take care not to roll to much especially in stations. HalfLife 2 I can generally play for upwards of an hour or more before I need to stop, while Alien Isolation is more like 20-30 minutes. Though I have a strong feeling something is not right in AI as my eyes often feel more tired after playing that, but since the Rift is not officially supported, there doesn't appear to be many options for trying to tweak it. It feels as though the IPD value is not quite correct or something. Shame really as that game along with E:D really show case the Rift.

I thought SMAA was more of a blur filter to reduce jaggies, not really super sampling. I haven't tried it, but I do use nvidia's DSR which has very good results if your system can manage it.
[edit] I thought you meant SMAA

I got a 970 and tried all aa modes and supersampling (downsampling) and I see only differences in performance, downsampling being the worst. Usually any kind of antialiasing helps for readability. Need to say that my imagequality is great. I can read the text very well blue text better than orange. Small sizes are more difficult but that wont change with any kind of aa.

Tried direct mode yesterday and it is still capped at 37 frames for me.

Direct mode and 37.5 FPS is normal. I can't recall off-hand why that is, but it basically is 37.5*2 = 75. It's some kind of weird voodoo being practiced by the Rift in the background. I think it even involves sacrifice, but who knows; as long as it works, right?

As far as the motion sickness? Well, as others have mentioned, you get "used to it", ie: you will get your VR legs. Elite Dangerous is actually one of the gentler games, with the exception of the galaxy map and the outfitting screen. When I first started Elite, I couldn't open the galaxy map without feeling sick, but now I'm good with it.

Something I found on another game (iRacing) also in direct mode was that it was pegged to 37.5 fps. I had RTSS running in the background to fix framerate to 75fps and for some reasons iRacing was splitting that to 37.5, presumably per-eye. I created a profile in RTSS for iRacing with a FPS cap of 150 and it fixed the issue. Low persistence all the way :) Worth a try here if you're still looking for solutions for direct mode.

I tried supersampling and found the difference negligible. I had more noticeable improvement using the colour mods and changing my cockpit display to a light blue colour.

The increased demand on performance isn't worth it.

Sounds like he is getting sick due to running sub 75hz. ED is the only game I don't get VR sickness in other than seated experiences.

You're not the only one. Those Rift demos leave me reeling with nausea after only a few minutes. Elite Dangerous doesn't because space is mostly black. I get dizzy inside stations though, especially when I have to roll (so I usually close my eyes).
