Needs more explanation.
Have you and your friends tried creating a private group and using that?
Step 1: Add each other as friends.
Step 2: Pray to the matchmaking gods that you can connect to each other.
Step 3: Write an angry post when it clearly doesn't work.
Other than that, there isn't much you can do. If you do connect to each other, then you can go to the same system and see each other maybe 10% of the time at least!
You can also try private groups, but step 2 needs to succeed to make one.

Hi Sarduca, lots of us play with friends without a problem so without more detail your original post feels like it could be a troll, could you let us know a bit more and maybe we can help out?
I see no issue with following another pilots wake who you are playing with on comms etc - that's how i'm doing it.

ED doesn't offer any possibility to create a squadron with your friends. This feature was originally planned (referred to as 'wings') but was eventually postponed to an undefined point in the future.
Hence, in its current version ED only offers random matchmaking in open multiplayer with no guarantees who you will end up with in your instance.

so get online to play offline with an online friend.
I sympathise with you OP. ED really need to fix the whole group play thing. Ive been pleasantly surprised with the massive improvements theyve made over the last two weeks so hopefully a fix isnt too far off.
Wings is scheduled for early next year, but it is possible to play with friends now, create a private group and you should be able to see each other
it's far too frustrating getting the speed right for it to be any use. by the time you drop out the fight's normally over
i've had problems playing with friends since beta 1. it's getting better, but nowhere near a real multiplayer game yet. the most commanders i've ever seen is 6 (in Lugh, where i know there are many players at the moment) that doesn't make a MMO to me. space is big but i know there's more traffic in the system i'm in at the moment that i'm not seeing.
i've port forwarded and it seems to have helped a little.
Currently people in your friends group have the highest chance of being match made with you. I.e. if it is possible for the game to put you together it will, but you must add your friends as friends in the list!

"Wings" (squadrons) is slated to arrive "early 2015", which is being interpreted as Q1 2015 (but could be Q2). This will make following a wing members wake out of SC much easier and allow for divided bounties, split missions etc.
Wings has indeed been promised as one of the first major updates due in the new year, the Dev's have been pretty much upfront about this for a while now
This is false (the random matchmaking bit), people on your friends list are prioritised to appear in the same shard as yourself, it works for me and my friends.
So far they didn't give as any date other than 'Soon™'.
Nope, I said there are no guarantees. I.e., friends list just increase the likelihood but there is no 100% certainty that you will end up with your friends.
At least you have smart friends! I'd recommend them to wait and see too ;-)
"Early next year" is quite concrete in my book.
If they have reliable connection, there's guarantee you have to meet them in same island.
