This last hit to claim the bounty mechanic has to go.

So I was bounty hunting by a Nav beacon in my Sidewinder when I found a Federal Dropship with a 60000 bounty on it. I decide to take him on and manage to chip his his health down to 30% when the feds realize that he is wanted and engage him. We get him down to 5% and that's when the feds decide to launch all their missiles at him and blow him up before I even get a chance to try to last hit him. It blew up with me futilely pew pewing at it and I got absolutely nothing out of it for my time.

tl;dr Spent 10 mins chipping away at a Federal Dropship with a Sidewinder when the Feds show up and finish him off and I have nothing to show for it.

You might consider (depending on what you are doing) turning off the option to "Report crimes against you"
This can be found in the right hand panel (Functions iirc)... This can help avoid kill-stealing fed's... but sometimes you may want it on.

Couldn't agree more, there's nothing more annoying that spending 15 mins on an Anacodna to have an AI jump in and get the last shot. FD PLEASE make it so cash reward/who "got the kill" is done on a percent basis.

This! Turned this off months ago

Feds go after wanted criminal at nav beacons.

They do indeed and I agree that its frustrating.. I wasn't meaning this as a solution at a nav beacon though, sorry for the confusion. At a USS it can be very handy indeed though.

It's just as frustrating when they charge the FSD's and jump away with 1% hull :D

Found some rare artwork, smashed into it while attempting to Stowe only to destroy it in the process. Don't feel so bad, we all have our hair pulling moments.

Completely agree. It's bad enough when it's a Player killstealing, it's insult-to-injury when it's the AI!

Bounty needs to be distributed for effort in some way.

Yes, just be aware it can cause clean ships to attack you without getting a bounty. So be ready to turn it back on. This doesn't happen often.

To the op, this is not likely to change. Bounty hunting is intended to be competitive.

A good tip is to target the power plant. This increases your chances of getting the killing blow on big targets.

This is a matter of practice and experience. It's been ages since this happened to me. You get better at timing your killing salvo with time.

Gauge the speed the hull is reducing and make sure you fully charge your weapons power before lining up that last push.

You'll get it eventually.

That's why they're the Feds, the only thing they live for is swooping in at the last second to take everything you've earned once payday comes.

kill stealing - by players or ai - was largely solved years ago in mmos. im surprised its still around

the player thats done the largest percentage of damage gets the credit, which clears if the largest percentage user dies or leaves the battle area for too long.

Games have been this way since.... well, as long as I've been playing.

Instead of whining, sit back and let the Feds do their thing, then sweep in and steal THEIR kills instead!!!
The door swings both ways, ya know... ;)

My thoughts exactly. I think the player who dealt maybe 70 - 80% of the damage required to make the kill (in a certain time frame) should get the kill.

Last night I encountered an Asp and an Adder chipping away at each other slowly. 35k on the asp, 15k on the adder. I finished both off. 50k for about 2 minutes work.

Learn to see this mechanic as an opportunity and not a burden. I've made far more from this by kill stealing from feds and other bounty hunters than I have ever lost to it. The key is to maximise burst damage and know when to unleash it.

Although, if as you say the feds did this then they may be learning it as well. Donuts aren't cheap you know?

How does this top the kill stealing? (just wondering how it works)

Yup. Maybe even the cash reward could be shared out depending on who did however much damage.

Use the Feds to help you in your effort until you get a more powerful ship and weapons. You can steal from them too...let them do the work and get the shields down and eat into the hull. Jump in and manage your energy so you ensure you can make the last few shots. It's a skill that you'll develop over time.

A good solution for this would be, that the pilot with the most damage inflicted to this target get`s the bounty. I think that would be fair.
It`s hard to shoot a target down to 1% and another ship then comes by and spit against the hull, claiming all the bounty :)
