Attack wanted ship = getting wanted?

I got a job to kill 6 pirates in a system. I go to said system and start to attack wanted ships. I killed 2 without problems, but upon opening fire on a third ship (an Eagle that was also marked red on my radar) gave me a 200cr bounty and I became wanted...why? What am I missing here?

Three players then joined in and 1 started attacking me. Soon after all 3 ganged up on me. I bet none of them got a bounty placed on them...

The eagle was probably chasing pirates as well and glanced a shot off you (which is why it went red).
You then killed it even thought it wasn't originally 'wanted' status, which is why your now wanted.

Moral of the story: not all 'reds' are baddies..

I assumed attacking that NPC was okay because he was marked as both wanted and red on my radar... if he "accidentally" hit me and got marked wanted, why wouldn't it be okay for me to shoot back at him at the point?

Did you scan him before shooting? Because if you open fire on someone without first checking if they are Wanted, even if they ARE Wanted, you will get a bounty.

Not true, if he shot someone and got a bounty, he then becomes Wanted and is fair game. AS LONG AS you scan him first.

I've seen bounty hunter NPCs in Nav Beacons (the ones who are all Clean to start off with) hit me by mistake, turn Wanted, and then all their mates start shooting them :)

Yes I did. I saw the red triangle on my radar and scanned him. Saw he was wanted with a 2,000cr bounty, so I opened fire and got a 200cr bounty placed on me.
To my understanding, if I got wanted in one system and went to another then my bounty wouldn't transfer over to that system. I didn't have a kill warrant scanner either which means that NPC had to have been wanted in that system right?

Kind of thing happened to me tonight.

Hunting WANTED ships in SOL, a couple of rounds 'might' have gone a stray :) hitting the wrong ship... I became popular all of a sudden :) Quick exit and paid the fine.

It's the faction bug. If the other ships are of the same faction, they all turn red when you attack their friend but most likely WONT attack you. You need to target them each and wait for clean or wanted to show (no need of a KWS) before firing, or else you will get wanted status.

Yes he was red after I killed the first guy. But he was also WANTED when I targeted him. I assumed he was a part of the same faction or group as the first ship I killed, so it made sense to me that he would be red. Normally I wouldn't shoot NPCs like that unless I get shot at first, but the reason why I shot first that time was because he had a bounty on him. That being said, I don't think I got the bounty when I killed him either...

any chance a stray shot of yours hit a fed ship?

No without a doubt. I became wanted the moment my lasers touched his hull. It even said so in the top right. There were like 4 other NPC ships around at that time as well. At least 1 was a bounty hunter and 2 were feds. All were clean and neutral on my radar. None of them went red when I attacked that NPC and became wanted. In the middle of the fight 3 other players showed up like I said. After I killed that NPC, a player in an Eagle started shooting at me. I started shooting back and soon after the other 2 players are shooting at me.

I died trying to escape. Funny enough even though I was wanted and there were other NPCs in the area, only the 3 players shooting at me were red as I was running away. This confuses me even more and I want to get to the bottom of this because this wasn't the first time this has happened to me.

Lots of word vomit. TL;DR

Advice: Leave Federation Space.

Had the same problem. Went to Empire. Bounty Hunting with impunity now. Profit.

As I've only played 23 hours since alpha and not touched gamma or launch yet - are you seriously saying you have to SCAN a ship marked on your reticule as *wanted* BEFORE you open fire or risk a bounty on yourself???

What's the point of having the *wanted* visual mark on the ship name ID then? Why not just ID the ship and leave all other info for a scan. Alternatively fix the issue so *wanted* on your visual ID means it's ok to shoot, scans take time and so does messing around starting them, in the heat of a fight I'm going to shoot if it says wanted.

DO NPC's have to scan you or risk a bounty?

I thought this was "Elite : Dangerous" not "Elite : better check first...."

There is an odd bug going on, happened to me for the first time and I've been playing since Beta. Saw a ship, basic scan showed him as wanted. So I started firing, and initiated a KWS at the same time. Got a 200Cr bounty for that. KWS came back as wanted elsewhere too so I carried on shooting. Killed him, got a bounty voucher for the kill, also got a bounty for a murder and an immediate wanted status in that system and everyone hostile to me. I didn't hit anyone else. Frustrating. Luckily the bounty voucher was large enough to cover all the fines etc I got for the murder.

This was after a KWS. Not really sure what to make of it. Rep Fkt once again by an undocumented, unintuitive, and probably bugged game mechanic.

So it is a bug then? Because I have experienced this since Beta (can't remember the exact version but it was the last two versions before Gamma) all the way to full release.
Glad to see I'm not the only one that has run into this because I thought I was doing something wrong this whole time. Looks like I'll have to give up bounty hunting until this is fixed...if it ever is.

So, is this just a federation space issue. Its been happening to me quite often. I am mainly returning fire when it happens. Their friend is dead, another person is "wanted" (pre-scanned without KWS) and now red to me. Actually SHOOTING me. So i shoot back (no not a stray shot, im its only targeting, its firing multiple rounds right at me) get a 200cr bounty and become wanted the FSS then call in reinforcement and chase me across the system.

Its very frustrating.
