Newcomer / Intro Landing on platforms

Every time so far I've had to cancel my docking request and re-request to get it to work. I hover over the assigned pad and get no docking reticle and can't touch down to dock. I'll hover over it, re-request docking, get that same pad and it works just fine, a quick down thrust and I'm docked.

This has been every time I've requested docking at a platform. It never works the first time.

Is there a reason why this happens?

None that I know of, never had that issue, even in Beta. The only reason I can think of that happening is running out of time on your initial docking run, not that I am saying that is what you are doing its just the only reason I can think that it would happen.

I had the same at several platforms - either the docking aid is not there (but this happened a few times within starports rather than on pads) or I just can't dock on the proper place. But if I use the jaw and the thrusters to hover around in the area, I can dock acidentally with the nose of the ship towards a random direction.
Never tried to do another request though.

Issue (as in bug) appears when;
- an AI ship spawns at that pad, takes off, and you are assigned to that pad.
- a player takes off, same as above.

Good thing you found the workaround - you're right, cancel and re-request is the way that works right now.
And it happens more frequently in Open plays - vs Private Group and Solo (only the AI situation exist there).

I've had the same bug a couple of times, certainly not every time though. Happened in beta & gamma too.

You can still usually dock without the docking graphic though.

Kinda thought this one would be fixed by now.

Ok that makes perfect sense because permission was granted after a few denials which I assume were because all pads were occupied. The last time it happened I distinctly remember seeing a hauler launch and leave the pad I was told to use.

I had one docking attempt earlier that was denied so often I just went solo to do it.

I tried that. It gave me this sort of electrical crackling sound (not a hull scraping or buckling sound and with no damage) and I didn't trust attempting it any further so I thrust up to hover and re-requested docking.

i had this twice last night. first time i tried to land in the wrong pad just to check, sure enough the loitering warning came up. eventually i cancelled then reapplied for docking and the next pad worked

the second time it happened i think i hit the sweet spot by accident and it clamped me in, so i guess it's just a display issue thing and the station is ready to accept you. that was in a station, which i'm a lot more used to the positioning on

This explains it. I had this happen to me too and could not figure out why I could not dock at a platform. As I was trying to land an NPC was flying away..

if you have your shields up you don't seem to take any damage from that (even if you forget your landing gear *looks about* not that i'd know about that...). so feel free to grind about if you're trying to find an invisible spot :)

i certainly wont be worrying about that next time i get no docking guidance. if their holograph projector is faulty then they can scrub my paintwork off the pad until they get it fixed!

That issue has also been "fixed" several times, so better learn to live with it :(

On the upside, re-trying the approach from the opposite direction has so far never failed me.
