Mobius, does that say "clean me" ?

that was after 18 months use, I was sitting there playing a game and thought to myself that the PS3 was sounding like my xbox, and that isn't normal. since I cleaned it out it went back to playing silently:D

but its amazing how much crap comes out.

In other PS related news, hold off on a System Update at the moment.

I usually wait a month before installing an update for that reason.

Argh, now you've gone and given me work to do...

fans get noisy and machines die of overheating because of dust build up. Yet manufacturers still insist on cooling by sucking dust saturated air into the case and caking it onto sinks and between the fins of heat exchangers that are sealed away from easy maintenance. I still remember some early PC's from the 8086/80286/80386 generations that had heat-sinks protruding outside of the cases and were easily kept dust free. Also Mainframes from the early 70's would have had premium importance on maintaining the cooling solution.

I would suggest vacuming the vents if you dont already do that for dust.
Or take the case apart and clean the accumulated dust off the fan and other areas. it should not be noisy as a BD player, or even for games, though some games are more taxing on it than others and the fan will go to max. Some people say the thermal paste on the cpu is no good and should be redone on the fat models.
I think the slim are better for cooling somehow.
The super slim are terribly noisy, avoid completely if a disc is needed. They are ok apart from that. Its just disc noise.

That a great way to short the whole system out. Unless you ground the vacuum. So there little chance or shorting or frying your console computer laptop. Also remember to ground your self before touching any of parts of the unit.

Well about the thermal paste. Good point.

Now newer vs Fatter Models. Well Older PS3 had both xbox 2 and Xbox 3 chips on it.

There could also be smaller cpu & Graphics chip over time to cut cost and heat. Which could help in cooling.

Now smaller Unit like the PS3 slim type consoles. It could dissipate heat better vs the older models. Just because it can draw in cool air better to keep the unit cool. Just due to the smaller size.

This looks like an interesting development. It's claimed to be dust-immune, so instead would spray the dust liberally on the other components in the case.

I already reviewed that last year. It's a bold claim when really the heatsink has become the fan blades. After we've seen them in actual real world use for circa 9000 hours and above, then we'll know if their claims are reliable. In the mean time there are some promising projects in passive cooling. With zero moving parts they are more energy efficient and dust is just something to be wiped off occasionally.

I would like to clean my ps3 but had heard undoing the screws was not easy because they were so tight.

no you just need Torx screw driver, its not difficult to do, just take a look at any youtube video about undoing your ps3. you are mainly taking of the top cover not taking the internal gubbing out.

looks like the PS4 controller is a more mature size now.

Are you sure the Xbox controller didn't shrink?

A mix of both- the Xbox controller has been reduced in size a bit apparently and the PS4 controller has been beefed up. Both good adjustments in my opinion; whilst the Xbox controller is a perfect size for me I know a few people that find it a bit too big to use comfortably. I have always found the Playstation controller too small and uncomfortable to use for any extended period of time, so its cool to see they're making something more ergonomic.

Not bad Mobius, but I like this one better :D

I've always been a bit partial to the Halo adverts. This one being my favourite!

That advert always reminded me of Monty Python. Anyway, my PS3 died on me the other day, so I'll be after a secondhand slim version soon...
