A new players sad story

I have been playing several months, but I convinced a friend to give it a go.

I am posting this for him (I love Elite already so I am prepared to 'put up' with this stuffs)

Without my help, forums and youtube he simply wouldnt have stood a chance. However, this is his release day diary.

Tutorials done. Not bad...could have been guided better (as above without additional research no chance).

Ran a days worth of trading/missions/mining made it to an Eagle, started kitting it out.
He is playing predominantly as a bounty hunter (and is pretty good at it).
2 times...15 mins + in combat against a big bad baddie...cops last hit...he loses large lumps of money on repairs/restock.
Looking for better guns....goes on the well known 'item' hunt, adds in a better power/shields/kws/wake scanner etc.
While looking for better guns (hopping from Hi Tech to Hi-pop Industrials based on forum research) notices he is low on fuel. Checks map, jumps to a system that says it has a station with fuel....but it doesnt. SELF DESTRUCT'

Had money to cover insurance.

Gets NPC jumped...shot at fires back...HE gets a bounty....kills baddie...feds arrive and kill him.

Down to his last pennies....takes on a couple of safe targets in a nav beacon.

Kills a couple...one more to cash in and cover insurance....fed flies across stream of fire...cops a hit...he gets bounty and killed.

6 hours of woe/bug/disaster....Elite looks great, feels great, I will come back in 6 months when its finished were his words. He couldnt be bothered creating a NEW account on forums...as its not the same as his game account....just another thing.

So pro : Feels are good, ED got his money
Con : Just too dysfunctional

Sometimes you progress in leaps and bounds, sometimes you barely crawl forward, sometimes you go backward. Elite is a harsh mistress.

It is bizarre and nonsensical, but the safest systems for bounty hunters and players in general are anarchy systems. You don't have to worry about getting fines or the fuzz jumping in on your kill. If you hang out at the nav beacon and kill warrant scan targets without any cargo of your own (that would attract pirates), you can pick your engagements most of the time. I am camping out in one until things are less screwed up with rep and trading and missions and navy rank and all that jazz. I only leave to collect the bounties and do upgrades.

Indeed, it doesn't make sense, it should be extremely dangerous to go into anarchy systems but no its safe as houses, safer than most systems.

There are steep learning curves and there are trials by ordeal.

Many games that have grown to become greats...allow the entry level player to paddle a bit before swimming in a pool full of sharks.

Not hand holding/not welfare...but give folks a chance.

You are interdicted...you are shot at....you shoot back...you are now wanted and executed and lose a large chunk of asset and as yet handed in vouchers (like the co-op in 1972).

You run out of fuel at a station that says it has refuel. You need to commit suicide.

You hunt a 'pirate' and kill a wanted person ... but they arent a pirate...no points for you.

You hunt a 'trader' and kill a trader....you are wanted...but you dont get the trader reward.

You take goods marked as 'export' to the system they are 'exported to' you make a loss.

You want to upgrade your X to a Y but there are no clues why this wake scanner is better/kws scanner is better other than some letter thingy.

If you already loved Elite before you bought it....you will push through all of these and the 100 things not there yet.....

IF not.....our response is, dont let the door hit you on the way out.

I just started playing today and have no problems. Been interdicted killed the guy no bounty, shot wanted people in front on feds, feds help me kill him. I got one bounty because I jumped in with the feds attacking some pirate and hit the fed ship with my multicannon by accident...kinda understandable they didn't ask for help so it is my fault.

As for running out of fuel...well dumba** dont you own a car, check the gauge before you go. I wouldnt try to drive to Mexico on a tank of gas and no idea where to get fuel so why would I jump outside of a system with no enough fuel to get back or to a place I don't if it has a gas station.

Sounds like your buddy just couldn't hack it. Tell him to stick to COD4.

Geez you fanbois need to actually read the OP. He's playing the game as intended from a fresh perspective and gets hit with the botched rep system in place at the moment.

No amount of "ED is a harsh mistress" crap will fix the rep issues currently.

And it is broken ATM despite some saying it's perfect and working as intended.... until FD fixes it. Stop making excuses for them.

Nope, this player was just unlucky to be caught out with some game-breaking bugs that really underline how this otherwise wonderful product was ultimately rushed out way before it's ready.

Exactly how I feel, and was afraid of. I thought that the 16th was way too early to deliver a game. I would rather have waited a year for ALL the features to be in than to have a game that was thrown together just to make the deadline. If they are planning on releasing the rest of the features as DLC, it had better be FREE!

Please read the post before the Dumb XXX insults, he noted he was low on fuel (the gauge doesnt indicate 'how much'...you get a blue highlight giving you an idea how much a jump will cost...boosting, supercruising who knows....), realising he was running out of fuel, he checked the galaxy map, found a system that SAID it had refuel...jumped, ate more than half his remaining fuel...and boooshka....no REFUEL at the station (I have been to systems with MISSING stations) and now he is stuck.

There are few gotcha's like this, double jump to 2 unscoopable suns and your in the doo doo

Lose your sensors...and you cant ask for docking permission !!! get out of that one....

and so on.

Simple conversation.

1) Him....how can I tell how much fuel it will cost to jump from A to B to C
A) You can't
2) How much fuel does supercruising use ?
A) No idea
3) How much fuel does local space flight/boosting etc use ?
A) No idea
4) What happens if you run out of fuel then ? ! ?
A) Commit suicide (they never implemented the thing that would help with this)

I think he needs to learn to run away more. Seriously I was bountying in the Eagle too and annoyed a few System Auths enough to make them turn red. Run and live. Sometimes you need to admit that others are better than you, even if they are NPCs.

That all sounds like we was flying around without a Kill Warrant Scanner ?

The game always was extremely tricky on me whenever I went into Nav beacons without it - ended up with a bounty several times, had to Afterburner away from Clean NPCs and Police attacking me and quickly pay off those 400 Cr at the nearest Station to get my Wanted Status wiped ASAP.
The Kill Warrant Scanner is your only insurance that you can safely engage another target first.
Otherwise, the Game does recognize extended self-defense (i.e. helping a Federal Fighter that is unter attack), but the Clean NPC must fire & hit the Wanted guy first.

Without the Kill Warrant Scanner, the only other solution is to wait until you are positively attacked and hit. Every time. No offensive engagement on Wanted NPCs whatsoever.

Ever since I keep a Kill Warrant Scanner onboard - apart from producing security from Police when attacking Wanted NPCs, it usually keeps even that Wanted guy's friends off my tail (even if they turned Hostile due to affiliation with their buddy/faction).
One just has to make sure those are > not < being engaged under any circumstance. They'll aggessively approach you, scan - but fly off after seeing you being clean (outside of the occasional bug/network lag than can make them actually attack once a while).

Whenever something goes wrong or unexpected - fire up the FSD and leave. You can return a few minutes later with everything being okay.
--------------------------

Other than that, indeed an unlucky story - often resulting from the steep learning curve ELITE demands from the Player. Until that is achieved, things can and will go unexpected... I know I had my moments of frustration (lots of them) but I carried on - and it paid off big time.
Giving up due to those setbacks is the worst mistake one could possibly make in this game - and after a while (might be a longer time) that persistency suddenly starts to pay off.

I'd be happy to meet your friend and toss him a few Cargo Canisters of Palladium; that way he could try again with the gained knowledge. In a Viper Mk. III this time...
That's also part of ELITE - when things go really bad, you're usually not left behind alone ;)

This has been gone over time and time and time again, by seasoned bounty hunters in videos and by the devs themselves. You should not need a kill warrant scanner to engage a target scanned and revealed as wanted (as this means it is wanted for this system, targets wanted in other systems but not in that system will register as clean. Sandro has clarified that more than once, he also claimed to have fixed the bug in a previous Gamma. However, as many seasoned bounty hunters will tell you, it still endures, and happens regardless of whether you use the kill warrant scanner or not.

I had my hull knocked to 81% and my thrusters blown out to 0% on an asp from a single frontal volley . Apparently that is not repairable with auto-maintenance either. So there is another gotcha. I guess I should go back to WoW, COD, or whatever is the flavor of the month game for snide nasty comments.

There's a consumption rate defined for fuel. There's a thin line above the main fuel tank line. That's the fuel in the cell that is currently being drained. If you're on your last cell (they're easily visible in the eagle with its stock fuel tank as discrete cells) Do not attempt a jump without refueling. The eagle is a fine, fast ship, but it doesn't have endurance. Want to use the Riddick quote from Pitch Black here, but I forgot the exact line.

Hey Jeheil,
Sorry to hear your friend had a bad experience. It's alot more fun when you have real life friends rolling in a game with you.
You say your buddy, "He is playing predominantly as a bounty hunter (and is pretty good at it)." yet he ran outa gas and shot at Feds? Hehe.. }
He might not want to hear this but I think he might need to change back a gear, and maybe do some more missions, or trading.
Or even just exploring... until he has some more funds to back himself.
Take safer options.

You know yourself it's a game of risk, bounty hunting as a trade is putting your ship and finances at a great risk.

I hope your friend continues to play, and has a bit more luck with it.
