A new players sad story

I have been playing several months, but I convinced a friend to give it a go.

I am posting this for him (I love Elite already so I am prepared to 'put up' with this stuffs)

Without my help, forums and youtube he simply wouldnt have stood a chance. However, this is his release day diary.

Tutorials done. Not bad...could have been guided better (as above without additional research no chance).

Ran a days worth of trading/missions/mining made it to an Eagle, started kitting it out.
He is playing predominantly as a bounty hunter (and is pretty good at it).
2 times...15 mins + in combat against a big bad baddie...cops last hit...he loses large lumps of money on repairs/restock.
Looking for better guns....goes on the well known 'item' hunt, adds in a better power/shields/kws/wake scanner etc.
While looking for better guns (hopping from Hi Tech to Hi-pop Industrials based on forum research) notices he is low on fuel. Checks map, jumps to a system that says it has a station with fuel....but it doesnt. SELF DESTRUCT'

Had money to cover insurance.

Gets NPC jumped...shot at fires back...HE gets a bounty....kills baddie...feds arrive and kill him.

Down to his last pennies....takes on a couple of safe targets in a nav beacon.

Kills a couple...one more to cash in and cover insurance....fed flies across stream of fire...cops a hit...he gets bounty and killed.

6 hours of woe/bug/disaster....Elite looks great, feels great, I will come back in 6 months when its finished were his words. He couldnt be bothered creating a NEW account on forums...as its not the same as his game account....just another thing.

So pro : Feels are good, ED got his money
Con : Just too dysfunctional

I think a lot of the people here have short memories. This is almost identical to my first experiences with ED back in early Beta, and it can be very frustrating at times. However, that frustration will fade as you become more familiar with the game. Once you know the boundaries, and the dynamics, you will change how you play to fit the game, and it will open up to you. In a months time your friend will forget all the frustration, and hopefully he will be enjoying it as much as most of us are.

Its funny. In the 80's and all its games without explanations or hand holding we didnt have access to information through the internet but we figured things out by ourselves and were happy doing so. Now when we have internet and a wealth of information at our finger tips people frequently use it to moan instead about how there is no information... Its very strange to me. I hope your mate comes back later on though. You shouldnt give up on things so easily cause you will miss out on a lot of good in life that way. :)

PS. Yes im in favour of having a couple of tuts to get you started, but i dont get defeated if they arent there. Check YT and the forums. You will gain all the knowledge you need.

I am posting this for him.

If your "friend" needs someone else to post on a forum for him then anything above tetris is probably going to be in the "too hard" basket.

But anyway, tell your "friend" to go and use the Clear Save option and start again using what he has now learned to do better next time.

Funny thing is that FD recognize it as a bug.
These people are defending a bug, that says a lot.

im not defending this bug, actually yes this is a BUG. but its not the bug the op described. is it so hard to grasp that "shooting a wanted get you fined" vs. "shooted a wanted gets your reputation down and feds with same faction as wanted get red on you" are different things? the later is a recognized confirmed bug. the first is not happening.

The thing is that both of them are bugs and both of them are still happening, despite the fact that the change logs say they've been fixed. The former happened to me yesterday!

you still owe me that video of you shooting at a wanted and get fined/bounty on your head :) (alternative that quote of sandro you mentioned where he admits this bug is still in the game ^^)

Mate, I don't, I'm not about to start taking videos of everything I do just to appease you. A good number of people, most of them not noobs, are experiencing this bug and are reporting and ticketing it. Honestly, I thought the first few times that it was me doing something wrong, that I hadn't scanned the ship properly or whatever, but after going through all the loops again, making sure I scan them first and they come up as wanted, I still sometimes get fined for attacking wanted NPCs. It happens, many people are experiencing it. Oh yeah, and you still owe me your screenshot of 1000+ kills, because honestly, I'm stunned you've never come across this...

He chose to take on the hardest role from the get-go, and he did it in a high-risk manner. I don't think that's "playing the game as intended" for a beginner.

And yet the "box cover" says "Blaze your own trail". It doesn't say anything about getting shot to pieces through no fault of your own.

The sense of entitlement is strong with this one.

Sometimes you progress in leaps and bounds, sometimes you barely crawl forward, sometimes you go backward. Elite is a harsh mistress.

Thus one of the best advices to new players I've ever heard: Stick to the Sidewinder for a while; crash it; smash it; have it shot to pieces; dare to make all errors you can possibly make. THEN start investing into bigger ships and head out into the cold, cold-hearted universe.

I think he needs to learn to run away more. Seriously I was bountying in the Eagle too and annoyed a few System Auths enough to make them turn red. Run and live. Sometimes you need to admit that others are better than you, even if they are NPCs.

Something to keep always in mind :D

Some sink, some swim.

Some strive for something better, fight for improvement and call out problems where due. Some keep living their mediocre lives with whatever others give them. Enjoy your mediocre games, I'll keep pestering until they make it better.

there is no kill count statistic anymore as i see it. you may direct me there and i will take the shot.

This was after a KWS. Not really sure what to make of it. Rep Fkt once again by an undocumented, unintuitive, and probably bugged game mechanic.

no proof, he said himself it was after a kws, you can get bounty for a non wanted ship this way and also a fine. (which is intended)

killcount: so you think every kill you make is a bounty voucher you claim and be able to redeem (only those show in statistic)? ... lol. besides: you do know there were several wipes since alpha?

Right so how many kills have you had since Gamma? Because that's specifically the period we're talking about right? Also, bounties claimed are kinda relevant, given that we're talking about bounty hunting? Also, combat rating is not simply about bounty hunting, it's about total kills, so come on...

Here you go:

https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=69029

[EDIT - Sorry that's not the one I was looking for, trying to go through the backlog to find it]

http://www.miggy.org/games/elite-dangerous/devtracker/ed-dev-posts.rss

this might help you.

killcount: in earlier Versions it showed kills, i had 750+ in oktober (made a posting about it back then). I have 84 bounty vouchers claimed since last wipe. prbly. 200+ kills. so 1000 since alpha is prbly. even a low number ^^

Three friends of mine started the game yesterday (They were the slow ones everyone else started in alpha/beta/gamma). Two of them just seemed to get on with the game, the third spend most of the night on vent complaining, being confused, unsure about the controls, unsure about everything having not read up on the game or watched/played the tutorials. I of course offered a lot of assistance but it was still a little frustrating to hear the demand for hand holding from someone who I know is an excellent gamer and a mature player in his 40's who usually does a lot of research. Now the funny thing was as the night progressed the complaining lessened and the excited giggles and story telling started. By the end of the night he was raving about the game more than the two friends who just got on with it.

Long story short, folks complain when confused but it doesn't mean they're not going to love the game once they get past the initial hump. Sometimes that hump can actually mean you like the game more because you feel you've mastered something you found hard before.

Sounds like your friend is lucky that he got to learn a couple of hard lessons on day1 instead of on day20 with millions of credits spent in his ship and cargo. From the OP the only thing I see that would be a bug is the station offering no fuel if it says it does. Even so why is he jumping to another system to refuel, if he was looking for upgrades why didn't he refuel at each station? I've never run out of fuel since B1.

Don't shoot clean targets even if they attack you.
Don't shot the cops even by accident. And if you do - RUN!
