Newcomer / Intro Data canisters? Mercenary mission?

It is real hard to find exact answers to the questions I have in the Forum. And since we do not have a manual I will ask them here.

I scooped some cargo from space (salvaged), it is called something Data Canisters. What are they? And how can I find Black market to sell them? (is it worth the price?)

Also I did not understand how to complete Mercenary mission... I was flying around the destination system in supercruise mode, found one Wanted ship, but did not understand how to engage it (if I leave supercruise mode, he is no more arround). Even I did not understand if this ship is the one of two that I needed to kill. Any comments on that?

In general I am hugely impressed about the game (yesterday I did my first 2h game play, but before I already completed up to wave 9 the Incursion combat training). I like the vastness of the space and the physics of the universe... Just brilliant! I feel like I can loose myself somewhere between those stars :D

You can find black markets on several independent worlds by checking the Contacts screen in starport services.
Please note that cargo marked as "stolen" will result in a fine if you enter e.g. Federation starport and they scan you and detect this illegal cargo.
Small, independent stations don't often scan you.

To complete mercenary missions, it's probably easiest to find "Unidentified Signal Sources" in supercruise mode because you can "enter" it the same way you enter starport space. Then it's up to luck if the signal source is a Wanted ship or something else.

In order to engage a wanted ship in super cruise you have to buy a frameshift interdictor, get behind them, activate FSI and win the mini game.

When you scooped some space cargo, it is labelled as stolen and you will incur a hefty fine if scanned by security forces. Avoid bounty hunting with stole cargo and avoid big stations, go to outposts. My preferred black market is in Eranin, you can try to google for more locations.

I advice you to use this little program to keep notes: https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=74171&highlight=archv1

But how do I engage a Wanted ship from Supercuise mode?

And can I actually see in advance that starport will have a black market on it?

As sunracer said, you need a black market to sell the data canisters. You can't tell which stations have black markets until you land, but some systems are more likely than others to have them eg. every anarchy system will have black markets at the stations.
Don't get scanned though, if you get the scanning warning either get into the station quickly or turn and boost past the nearest ship with it's weapons out (triangle contact instead of square.)
One hint is that platforms, rather than stations, usually have no police to scan you so much safer to land.

Re mercenary missions, you need to exit supercruise at USS (unidentified signal sources), and then scan for targets that match your mission. You might find none, one or more. Keep going until you get enough to complete the mission.

Hope that helps.

Edit: to clarify, you can interdict ships to complete your missions, but you don't have to. Just drop at USS, they will pop up occasionally in your nav panel.

You either search all Unidentified Signal Sources, or buy the Frameshift Interdictor.

No, you can't see black market availability outside. It wouldn't be a black market if it was publicly announced, now would it. :p

Watch this: http://youtu.be/qo3AbcQLCMg

Step 1: Get a Frameshift interdictor module for your ship
Step 2: Find a target and get on his tail
Step 3: Activate Frameshift interdictor (it has to be assigned to a group in modules section)
Step 4: Win the mini game as seen in the video

And can I actually see in advance that starport will have a black market on it?
No, you can't. Suck right?
But Frontier would not listen to us during Beta/Gamme, so either live with it or leave it.
You can try google, otherwise keep a list.

Thanks for the help!

Still one last question from my side... Does it pay off to haul around and sell stolen Data Canisters?
