Newcomer / Intro targeting and nav questions

Hello Cmdrs,

I have just started playing an enjoying the game so far, bit of a steep learning curve but I'm sure I will get the hang of things with a bit more practice. I have a couple of questions about targeting and navigation.

Are there any tips for switching between targets more easily, and when super cruising being able to select nearby ships and switch back to your destination target? Sometimes when I use the 'next ship' bind and have a ship targeted I want to switch back to check the distance to my destination, what is the best way to do that? I notice that if I press 'next hostile' it will often swap back to the destination if there weren't any hostiles around. Maybe there is a better way. I do have key binds for next/prev ship, next/prev hostile, target ahead. Possibly unlock/relock the target in nav pane would work, but seems a clumsy way.

Regarding navigation, I think this question is probably the one that is causing most new players to get lost. When you take on a contract / transaction and for example it says go deliver this cargo to x destination, there isn't any easy way to lock that destination as your destination. My understanding is that you have to go to your navigation panel and either select that system / station if it is nearby, or if it is not near you have to open the galaxy map and do a search for the destination, then select it and click plot route. Then the nearest jump appears in your navigation pane and you can lock it as a destination, jump to that, and then the successive jump destinations automatically get locked on / appear in your nav pane.

That's fine and dandy in traditional games where the names of things are shorter and easier to remember, but when there are names like arual lh-x b2-7 (not a real example but similar) it's pretty tough to remember exactly the one you need without writing it down. I ordered an occulus and that's going to make it even harder if I cant easily look at my notes while playing.
The easiest solution to this would be to put an option to plot route to destination in the transaction tab for your contract, so when you look at the details of the contract you can select the destination from there and easily begin the travel. It would also be very useful to put a tab in the galaxy map that shows you any destinations related to your contracts, and an icon on systems where you currently have a contract for a task.

If anyone has any tips that can make this easier please let me know, I might be missing something as I have only just started playing.

You're right in your description of how it works. Considering how quickly Frontier update things though (once they get over the release lull - give them some time, the poor guys and gals need some rest), I'm sure that there will eventually be a link in the mission transaction itself that selects the system.

Edit: Oh, and welcome!

Welcome!

Exactly same things that bothering me too. Locking planet/station shouldn't be same as identifying ships. Taking job should automatically plan route and lock next jump. When you look at left panel, there should be some filter to show you only stations where you can dock, systems where you can jump and then all objects in space.

I believe that devs will program such things in time. We are in year 3300.

Great, thanks for the repsonses. Glad to see it's not me misunderstanding the game.

I really like the UI thus far so I'm confident they will be able to make this stuff better soon, game is still plenty of fun just adds a little bit to the learning curve for us noobies.
