Of course the difference between an employee and a slave is that the employee always has the choice of looking for another job, or in fact saying goodbye to the entire Federation and going to live on an independent world. This is not a minor detail.
Have a look at Empire territory. It's *completely* red, they take everything.
Take a look at Fed territory. It's always interwoven with independent systems who've been allowed to keep their independence and make their own decisions.
If I have a choice, I choose having a choice. All empire citizens are slaves, some of them just don't know it.

I feel for the empire, and their command of the language. Independent education is the superior way
In the Empire we can feel superior no matter how poor our grammar, the Emperor wills it.
(Don't tell anyone but I'm not really a Imperial Citizen, just a humble network engineer and Muscle memory is a wonderful thing when typing. If you want to covert decimal into binary I'm your man, English tutelage, maybe not)

Those are slaves, prohibited within the Empire. Imperial slaves however, are usually Imperial citizens who sell themselves into slavery for a fixed period to pay of debts. The Empire has a strong sense of honour, and one would rather become an Imperial Slave for a fixed term then face the humilitation of debt.

Except that Imperial slaves chose to be indentured servants and they will likely be upset with you for kidnapping them and cramming them in a shipping container. Freedom is relative.

The Imperial Slaves have a contract period and are well looked after, the slaves bought from Anarchy systems are usually held in stasis pods and are forced into slavery. Imperial Slaves usually put themselves into Slavery to try and keep some honour when facing debt or bankruptcy.
There are missions for Imperial High Command that will ask you to buy slaves from and bring them to stations owned by High Command so they can be given full Imperial Slave rights.
Self discipline is a trait the Empire values. A citizen that has no self control is welcome to join the Federation and be a burden on their economy instead
But this is just slaves, not Imperial Slaves... There should be a difference. I thought Imperial Slaves have it better than normal ones, and the Imperial ones eventually get out once their debt has been payed (which is usually why they go in to begin with). Where as normal Slaves get sold in and there is no escape, unless us CMDRs do our part
See, this is the delusion - There is no difference, in the end. Slavery is slavery is slavery - It doesn't matter if you want to be enslaved or not. It's the same concept as a supposed 'elected dictatorship', as ancient Greek democracies often turned into. You cannot vote away your rights, any more than you can legitimately sell yourself into slavery, which is the same thing, essentially. As a human being, you can't give away your right to freedom - it's a permanent, unalienable right.

The point your missing OP is that their just slaves. Without them how is the Empire supposed to run. Slavey has always and will be around until the end of time.
They are fed and watered and provided with basic medical care. One could consider that well looked after.

I know this is all in-character for you guys (at least I hope to God it is!) but I can't help but find it rather disturbing. Lots of people actually do think like this in real life, even now, in this 'enlightened' age of ours.
Not trying to spoil the 'fun', it's just... well, disturbing.
