Newcomer / Intro Daft question x 2 probably 1 of many

First mission to obtain 2 crates of Food Containers - ok me being daft are these for sale - can't find in commodities market- or do I have to kill a few traders to loot cargo to get them?

No such thing as a daft question. We've all been there.

Likely it's the commodity type "Food Cartridges". These are low priced items, often for sale by Industrial system (not Agricultural ones), and listed under "Foods". Retails for around 50cr per ton, and in a basic Sidewinder two tons mission should net you some profit.

So, look on the Galaxy map for a nearby system with an Industrial economy. Also check the other starports and outposts in the current system, as secondary starports/outposts can have economy types different to the main system economy.

Some missions do require the goods to be stolen, so watch out for those as they are a lot harder to fulfil and you will need a cargo scanner to check what other ships are carrying before opening fire.

Finally, I do sometimes find missions for commodities (the "fetch this" missions) where the commodity is on sale locally. So I accept the mission, buy the goods, complete the mission. Simples.

These likely wont be for sale in your current Galaxy. Check the galaxy map to see who is trading Food Containers - then jump there and by the amount you need.

Return to be credited.

You need to buy them at other station (propably in other system). Some missions tell you that it needs to be stolen, otherwise i do not know if it will work.
Go to galaxy map
Select one of the bars at top which let's you see commodity trade routes (i think is the 2nd from left)
Mark the one you need in this case food containers.
Go to the system from which those commodities are exported (vector of the lines should tell you that)
Find the commodity in system (food containers should be on some agri station ?)
Deliver just bought commodity to missions stations (you can find this in transactions tab in left ship menu)

Hope it helps. Might be unclear at first (especially that I write this from memory)

If it's a regular mission they will be found at a different station if they are available.

If you kill some traders to get them, they will be stolen and can only be given if it's a pirate/smuggling mission (denoted by a skull, and a warning that this is considered illegal in the text)

The reverse hauling missions ("We need this stuff, go get it from somewhere") are a bit harder than the basic hauling missions ("We have this stuff, take it over there for us"). It helps if you have a good idea where to find the different trade goods before you take the mission, though if you're just starting out you probably haven't learned that yet.

Most food items can be found at agricultural stations, though food cartridges are industrial products. (Think frozen dinners that you feed into 3D printers.)

I took Liquor and Microbial Furnace "fetch this" missions. Couldn't find any for love nor money. Lesson learned.

Surely you mean in your current System!!! That's a long way to go for food...

If you go to the Galaxy Map. Clear all the commodities and select only the one you are looking for. Then zoom out a bit. usually you will then see the closest system that is exporting the item...

I have found that it is not always as simple as Ag systems sell Ag stuff. For example, not every Ag system sells coffee. You really have to work with the Galaxy Map's trading route tool if you want to nail it down.

The other side to that is that not every station in a system sells everything that is exported. You may have to station hop in the same system to find what you need.
