Kill X pirates missions

How are these missions completed? I've tried them a couple times now and been unsuccessful both times. Last night I only had to kill 2 pirates. I killed more than 2 ships... who seemed piratey.. lol. How do I know which ships count as pirates, and how do I know how many kills have gone towards my mission? When I kill the last one, will I just get a "mission accomplished" message of some sort , or do I have to go back to the station where I picked up the mission? Also does the mission have to be turned in within the time window, or do I just have to get the kills in the time window?

Thanks :)

Not all wanted ships are pirates. The ones that say in the comm panel "What cargo are you carrying?" or the like are counted pirates for the missions.

As far as I can tell other wanted ships are not counted as pirates, and I haven't been paying close attention to the factions associated with each kill so I'm not sure what role these play.

It is the same for all of the low pay hunter missions, that come in for somewhere between 10-20 K

Iv spent hours zooming around the mission system trying to spot people in SC who look like targets. Smugglers for example, many people have said "Look for hauler type NPCs who are wanted" Well i can tell you this does not work.

So the way i found to work is as follows

Visit lots of USS's you might get a USS NPC who is clean, approach you and give you an alternative payment for abandoning your mission. Ignore this person, they are typically clean, so don't shoot at them. However, do read what they say, reading what they say can give a tip, i don't know if it is 100% valuable but from my few outings it does seem to help. Either that or i was very lucky.

They will say (if there are two stations in system for example) "Ignore your mission and come over to station A and have a beer on us, either that or you will get killed"

Soooo go and fly towards that station, when you are in the vicinity of that station/planet it orbits, throttle back and wait for USS's to appear.

In various USS's you will typically find a couple of police vessels and a couple of other vessels. Keep attacking the wanted vessels. When you kill one that is a target, it will get noted on your mission log that you got one. Once all targets are dead, it will flash 'Objective Complete'

Now iv only ever done these in systems with stations, so i am not sure about the 'middle of nowhere' ones. Though i suspect its still the same old USS running.

1. You have to kill wanted NPCs that belong to the Pirate faction. One clue for pirates, after you have targeted an NPC and finished scanning, check their subsystems in your Target screen. Pirates have cargo scanners installed.

2. You can also see your kill progress in the mission status info. As you kill pirates, the mission details includes a Kill Count for you.

3. Once you have filled your kill quota, a large Objective Completed message will display onscreen. Plus, when you view your missions, the mission title will have updated to say "Return to collect reward".

4. Pretty sure the mission deadline includes returning to the base to collect the reward.

Extraction points are also good places to find pirates. Drop in on one and look around for anybody attacking the miners. Sometimes you have to wait a minute but they'll show. You do have to watch out for system authority vessels defending the flock, though.

Not all "pirate targets" are wanted pirates. I picked one of these the other day, visited a few USS's where there were wanted folks, but they didn't count. Also a couple of USS's where everyone was "clean", but then half of the USS inhabitants would attack me and go red - at that point I killed them and checked the mission log and noticed the kill count was rising. I completed the rest of the mission, by dropping into USS and waiting for someone to be hostile.

All targets were clean, and KWS did not show any with out of system warrants. I'm guessing that some of these missions are actually faction wars, and you're being duped into fighting for one side or the other - and the guy that offers you an incentive to "not shoot the innocent traders" is sometimes telling you the truth. But too late for that particular group - I killed my 7 and claimed the reward.

So, saw something interesting tonight. Maybe it's new with the patch.

But, after doing the whole 'tempt you to not kill pirates' sub-mission thing, I dropped into another USS, no active missions. Saw some Green hits on my radar. Targeted, and look at that, a wanted Expert (irrc) Anaconda! And, the targetting arrows were green, and his hologram in my display was green!? Targeted another guy, and he was a Novice in a Cobra, also wanted, also Green. So....I took him out with my Eagle.

Are they tagging pirates with Green now to 'help' us out, maybe?

(On a related note, I really really hate it when they have a 'Clean' target all in Red. Every game I have ever played, pretty much, makes enemies red! No wonder they keep getting accidentally shot! Clean should be Green, and Wanted should be red!!)

Erm nope Kamicosmos, the green are ships who are members of a faction friendly or allied with yourself. The red ones are ships unfriendly with you, either because your reputation with their faction is bad or you have killed one of their faction in the present instance you are in. These colours have nothing to do with wanted or clean.

You can reset the temporary unfriendliness by jumping out then back into an instance (Nav beacon or the like) but to clear an unfriendly rep you need to do missions for the faction.

Read the text in the factions influence screen. It's pretty obvious which faction is the pirate faction. Then look for wanted ships belonging to that faction at the nav beacon. They don't *have* to be wanted, but it means no fines :)

Oh. Oh.....no. I just killed 4 more evil Green Pirates this morning!

Oopsie....well. That explains the cold shoulder I was getting at the bar, I guess....
