#LAVECON Summer 2013

Doesn't matter to me where you hold it in the UK I can't make it, Also its bloody freezing in Blackpool in jan/feb time I know I come from manchester I used to go all the time for new year and plenty of times in that off season period, but I love the cold sea air. So maybe people are the same way. I will say the choice of hotel would be paramount, one with good heating. Although if you pick a day like I did in 2004 (Jan 11th) you could see people blown to Bergen Norway :D.

About the weather in Blackpool

Snow
Blackpool doesn't get snow very often, and when it does it's only a couple of inches. Main roads in Blackpool would be kept clear. So if the country is covered in snow at the time, the worst part will probably be between your house and the motorway.

Wind
It does get windy in Blackpool. Not much anyone can do about that. Note: October is the worst month for wind in Blackpool.

and any other weather isn't any worse than where you live.

Yes, Blackpool would be about an 2 hour drive for me too, so doable.

Prices for accommodation and facilities might be high, though. Oct/Nov are on the edge of the "holiday season", but Jan/Feb would probably be cheaper.

It's not just about the snow in Blackpool, it's about the snow everywhere people will be coming from and driving through. Stabler would come from Wales, where the roads can be quite treacherous. Remember this year's Red warning over Cardiff. Snowy, treacherous weather on motorways should be avoided at all costs. I drove in the aforementioned red warning and was almost sideswiped by a sliding Stobart lorry.

October/November may be windy, but the chance of snow is FAR less. I'd rather be blown across roads that I can control the car on than be blown across a skating rink called the M6.

I make it a general rule not to drive in snow for safety reasons unless it's an emergency, especially given the violent changes in weather than have gone on for the last couple of years.

I'm just trying to pre-empt a situation where the con is all organised and everyone is coming, then a blizzard comes along and no-one can make it and airports and roadways are closed.

We are talking about six months from now, even the Met office don't know what the weather will be six months from now.

I completely agree with everything you said about the snow.

But if you want a #Lavecon at six months from the last, and people would prefer somewhere else of different time of year ... it won't be Blackpool, and I can't organise it. The weather in October / November is just as bad and financially it is way more expense.

I will soon put up a poll.

This was a minimal 3 day event for me. Luckily I could tack on a holiday to visit my family onto it, but coming from abroad it is a minimum of 3 days. Also it is that much more expensive. Air fares, hotel, travel in England (bribes to Fozza to let me in.....) so budget is a real limiting factor, besides having to reserve holiday time for such an event.

This one was great. I would dearly love to go to another one, and will see what is possible if it ever gets that far.

I'm waiting for more people to see the idea / suggestion of a #Lavecon in Blackpool in Feb 2014 and then I will put up a poll.

Oh go on then ;)
As the first one was close to me, it is only fair the next is close to you :p

P.S. The MET office couldn't reliably tell you what the weather will be like 6 minutes from now ;)

We had a saying in the funbus... it went along these lines..

Psykokow : Im sure this is the right road..
Graeme : ZzzzZZZZZZZzzz
ALien : OOH thats the junction back there...
Psykokow: Yup this isn't the right road... ******!!!

Now it happened more than once... you'd think going home would be easier...

NORTH... but they complicate it with North East, North West... Midlands..

What is very strange is I remember it slightly different ... ;)

North AND South on the same sign going in the same direction.

Good Job guys!!!

Can't wait for the next one ;)

If the authors are busy around the time and can't take the time off, could web-chat (video) sessions be organised with them? Do we have the technology?

Also it was held in Cheltenham because it was convenient for John, Allen, Fozza and Chris. You can't have a LaveCon without all 4 and I can't imagine they would be too enamored to head a long way from their locale to organise an event.

Yip.... BUT you could hold you own event... and I AM CERTAIN Lave Radio will be happy to advertise it..

If you need help organising then create a thread and ask for it... Im sure the community has all the skills you may need.

Not THAT is something I could more or less commit to! :)

And the technology exists and is usable.

I'm going to disagree here ... and if any of the Lave Radio guys want to comment on on this, please do.

Lavecon is named after the fictional planet Lave, not Lave Radio, which itself is named after the fictional planet Lave. So for it to be called Lavecon is, forgive me for being blunt here, nothing to do with the Lave Radio guys other than the fact they called their podcats Lave Radio and naturally they called the event Lavecon.

There is no reason why a gathering of Elite fans can't be called Lavecon. It fits with other convention names ie ComicCon, BlizzCon etc. And you will have to accept that sooner or later, there will be a gathering where at least one of the Lave Radio guys doesn't attend. To insist that only gatherings all four Lave Radio guys attend be allowed to be called Lavecon is neither fair to anyone organising it or to the Lave Radio guys themselves.

Here's a hypothetical situation ... what if the Lave Radio guys are organising a gathering, and call it Lavecon, then one of them says "I can't make it" ... do they have to stop using the name Lavecon because only three out of the four guys will be there?

It would be great if the next 'con could also take into account any international visitors who might like to pop by. As such, it should be located relatively close to an international airport...

Also, Edinburgh at some point when it is pretty there would not go amiss either - we've been planning to visit the area... :)

Blackpool has an international Airport, or failing that, Manchester is a 90 minute train ride away.

It would be wonderful to see all the Cobra MKIII, Imperial courier, Viper ... stationed at the international airport. May I suggest for international transport of group, the making available of Anaconda and Panther Clipper ?

:p
