Beyond the EXPANSIONS

I highly doubt it.

Let's get ED out and running first ;)

What I ment by that is the problem rather than the code :) yeah lets get ED out first before that, but if its been branded around how he wants to do it I'm sure at some point he's had a good think about how :)

No, no it's a reasonable assumption. Planetary landing's should have been in from the start.

If we're going to get to the heart of the matter I do think FD gave planetary landing and walking about some thought and decided that it was too big an undertaking to be done before ED was released hence why it was delayed as an addon pack.

From my point Rollo there was no loss with it being delayed as I only played Elite but I do appreciate that others would have been disappointed. The seamless takeoff and landing did look cool and was revolutionary - far better than a cut scene you normally see.

I just hope that the engine they use can cope with the infinite and the finite at the same time ;)

I really hope this is not another round of people putting forward ideas of how we can pay more, like there were at the end of the Kickstarter.

If you want to pay more, fine, then you donate! But please don't suggest that that rest of us should be made to do the same. Especially those who already went out on a limb to back the kickstarter.

As far as I'm concerned, I have donated to the KS and am entitled to any expansions. End of story!

I too pitched in initially at the £80 mark because of the promise of, as I read it, all expansions. This is much more than I would normally pay for a game. Especially one that doesn't even exist yet.

Then I got a better job and jontied my way into the alpha so I think I have spent enough on this one now.

The 80 pounds or above pledge level grants you that "entitlement"

Anything below and for each add-on pack it's time to dig into your pockets.

Correct (he says confidently without checking ;)).

I'm not saying people shouldn't invest/donate more if they want to. But cash strapped as I am, it grips me when "enthusiastic" forum members come up with extra ways to relieve me of cash I can ill afford.

FD have their financing models in hand, seemingly. Had they not, this would have been a reason for me not to bother backing. Eg. Had it been subcription based, then Elite or not, I would have had to pass.

Same here, upped my pledge to have all the expansions for free. If my life goes the way I'm hoping it will, I'll be spending my spare cash on kids clothes, trips out, etc. so I've got my expansion fix covered in that respect.

I take it back...

I guess I hadn't considered that backers (at £80 or above) would be a small proportion of the overall player base, leaving plenty of players who will have to pay for extra content...

... I suppose my main hope in regards to expansions is that bespoke content is added in years to come, going further than the initial expansions we know about...

... I certainly don't want people to think that their early support shouldn't be rewarded, I would actually like some exclusives (only available to the original backers) for decals or maybe an anniversary cobra skin, the later expansions are released

I understand :)

Add-ons will be free for you forever.

The online service may not and depends on other financials .. I am sure as you said FD have it worked out.

There is .. access to the Founders World and a unique decal :p.

New people won't have that remember.

I'm not even going there if you've given it a crappy name like Liquania or Liqua's Crib! :p ;)

To be fair I don't name the planet itself just the system it resides in.

And I believe Nethanial chose the name for me - Blob* :D

(*only joking - need more info from FD then my Arab friends will help pick something appropriate)

No, no it's a reasonable assumption. Planetary landing's should have been in from the start. A lot of us "Frontier" players were really disappointed when he told us it won't make the initial release. Atmospheric flight and sometimes tricky landings due to high gravity was part of the fun in that game.
Walking around on planets though is a completely different story and one I highly doubt they're working on right now. I honestly struggle with understanding how they're going to make that part. It would be a massive expansion for sure.

To do planetary landings justice you really need to go to town graphically. And you've got to find a way to do the "seamless" bit.

And as soon as your wandering around planets on foot (or wandering around spaceships and space stations) the immediate question is: what's the gameplay? Won't the expectation be that you'll be armed? ...and then you've got to (a) graft a great 1st person MMO shooter into the game and (b) make this work on a planetary scale with cities, mountains etc... I can't see how it's realistically possible. Or in keeping with the rest of the gameplay.

So if you're not armed, what will you be doing?

I hope too that a lot of thought goes into it but Having a weapon is not a prerequisite to good gameplay. You could be searching for someone or something for example, meeting in a public place to find better missions.

It is in the nature of these forums that we speculate on things about which we don,t have all the info. But as I keep saying, I think we will all be pleasantly surprised on an ongoing basis.

Keep the faith:D

Does that qualify as good gameplay? It's hardly Super Mario. Does it justify the work that would be involved in creating futuristic cities you could wander about in? There's a big difference between flying over some buildings and standing next to them or going inside them.

Interestingly, Braben has speculated that you might be able to go hunting on planets, which seems to suggest he's expecting guns.

Dunno. I love the idea, but I'm not sure what the idea is!

That is the trouble, it is hard to imagine what exactly what will be worth doing on the surface. I was just trying to come up with an example.

Fishing, hunting, clandestine meetings, actually going out and inspecting geological formations, finding a fugitive in a hive of villainy, arranging transport contracts, finding someone's itinerary for nefarious purposes, stealing projected market prices for Lavian grubs, spying, just hanging around.
