Empire!

So release is here and the story lines are now active.

The empire is in flux with a lot of political maneuvering going on.

Players that are working empire allegiance are now having to make reputation choices etc that can be extremely hard to recover from if the wrong one is made.
The galnet transmissions are great but without knowing who and what everything is these little news stories don't really mean anything other than something new to read every now and then and possibly oo there is a conflict zone over there.

So can we have some information on the empire so informed choices can be made?
Who are the senators?
What is their known political stance on the state of the empire?
What systems doe they support? (patronage)
Who are the main contenders for a coup when the emperor dies?

We are in the middle of a story with no information or backstory its very frustrating and I find I avoid doing a lot of things because I have no real idea what impact this will have on my rep or even who it will push me towards supporting

Is there any other pertinent information we don't know yet?

Not even worth starting grinding rep with the empire rep system borked. But the backstory really would be nice to know I agree.

So, as I've understood it, there's 3 sides:

Mrs. Slaver lady, she has her own fleet, and likes slaves... and stuff
Mr. Populism, because no taxes, yay!
And then there's the playboy heir and his princess daughter who thinks slavery is dishonorable. So, Mr. Playboy prince and Ms. Marie Antoinette.

The first two are senators, with impressive material power.
The heir is, well, the heir, but most of his power comes from the loyalists who support him. He himself seems to care little for rulership and it seems more and more like any representation probably would be carried out by his daughter, who is adamantly anti-slavery.

Don't stop there, it was getting quite an interesting story - The news was interesting but you put a realist spin on it.

This is my impression so far:

Senator Patreus is an expansionist military hawk, whose wealth is based on the arms industry. He seeks to destabilize and conquer new systems.
Senator Torval is a ruthless businesswoman, whose wealth is based on human trafficking. She seeks to expand Imperial slavery, legalizing it where it's currently prohibited.

Both have used their enormous wealth to eliminate taxes in the systems they control, for increased popular support.

The Duval heir seems like a more decadent liberal-minded playboy, who doesn't live up to his father. Perhaps he'd be a weak-willed ruler who'd be controlled by his councillors, or perhaps he'd be a Caligula, I don't know much about him yet.

If I remember correctly, a statement by Senator Torval suggested that the daughter is basically just an airheaded pretty face who read some political statements off a teleprompter and botched the pronunciation of the system names. If that's the case, I figure it might be compared to a politician using a Hollywood socialite to promote his views on TV.

But then, that is Torval, of course. She is Torval.
The heir doesn't seem to care for politics, but what about the other courtiers? Are they pulling strings, maybe? Or maybe the princess has an agenda of her own, hidden under a pretty-face facade...
The intrigue!

I guess I now know which faction to support in the upcoming power struggle...

Sounds like someone's been reading History. I can respect that.

At any rate, I think I'll go with the abolitionist. Can't be a proper villain without an aristocratic title and to top it off - I won't have to be primitively evil to get one.

+1 For aristocratic titles and moustache twirling.

I'm siding with the traditionalists. Sir, I'll see you during the civil war.

Is it really borked? I cant tell if its meant to be this way or what.

I'm pretty sure it is. I'm allied with one Empire system and friendly with another, but still Neutral with the Empire itself. Meanwhile other people are already getting Officer ranks in the Federation.
