Dk2 Elite Dangerous Blurry Text Solution found!?

Hello all,

I can't begin to tell you how amazing Elite Dangerous is with the DK2. I am blown away. The only small complaint that many people and I have is that the text on menus in game is slightly blurry. Yes, you can lean closer in the cockpit to see it a bit clearer but it really is a bit of a shame that such beauty is a bit marred by only somewhat usable windows.

I searched online and one user came up with a solution as such -

"For those who complain about not being able to read the text very well in the rift... I turned on supersampling with my nvidia card and run the game at 2560x1440 with it being scaled down to 1920x10890 by my Nvidea card. It causes the text to be MUCH more readable and everything clearer"

Does anyone have any thoughts on this process and, more importantly, can anyone please with more detail explain exactly HOW to do what he is describing? I need specific instructions.

Secondly, if this isn't the only solution out there for the blurry text please share any ideas or solutions that you have seen work and solve this problem.

Thanks!

There are two ways to down sample... You can create a custom resolution in the NVIDIA resolution setting for the rift or you can set the DSR to x2 (for 1440) in the 3D settings section of Nividia control panel. I am currently using DSR x3 and the results are really awesome... It's like having a new Rift, but down sampling is for hardcore rigs only... You need a powerful graphics card and even then might not hit 75fps in all situations... I am running two 980's in SLI for example.
Hope this helps?

wow, what a great reply.

Ok, so, to get this straight. ... I have an option under 3d settings nvidia exactly called DSR that i just edit the line of or click and it gives me a "x2" option? Then what do i set the resolution for ED in game at?

Also, i have a brand new comp, processor etc with a superclocked (came that way) 980gtx. Perhaps I just to DSR x 3 instead of 2 and ill be fine since you have SLI?

Make sense. ? Please try and answer what I asked here bud, thanks!

i have a friend who bought the rift and said it was a complete waste of money, it was hard to see with it, it was uncomfortable to wear, and he was much less effective with it in combat and he sold it on ebay. He did say the emersion was cool at first, but it wore out/off real quick.

I bought a track IR and after using it for a couple hrs threw it in a drawer, to lazy to sell it on ebay, so for me; no rift, no track ir, no pedals, just a 32inch lcd and a X52 pro with CH trottle and time to bounty hunt.

Oh, i also surf the internet in SC when trading and when jumping between systems.

No offense meant here but what is that supposed to do for us who like the rift enough to refuse monitor play after trying the rift and are just trying to discuss downsampling? Should I suddenly toss my rift now because you didn't like it?

With a single gtx 980 x3 DSR will likely be too much... I just tried it with my rig and, whilst it works there is noticeable latency.
X2 was ok, but you may need to turn a few graphics settings down in game. I would argue that it is worth it if you can still get 75fps as the image is sharpened up enough to take the Dk2 to a whole new level.

Each to their own, but setting up a Rift correctly and having a machine that can run it effectively goes a long to ensuring it is as good as it can be... Which for me is game changing experience

How's that?

Hey TJ ... That question for him or me? :p

Change the colour of the UI by following the instructions Here. Baron's blue works quite well along with any green layouts. It makes a huge difference as the sub pixel arrangement of the pentile display makes fonts with red very distracting.

Slack R. I just want to say thanks again.

Ok, some good ideas here that I will try.

Another question, if I may since you know my situation/rig a bit. I am experiencing minor Judder in Elite Dangerous. Minor. I am experiencing more with JAUNT while having fun trying out the Paul McCartney video and other apps for virtual reality are giving me some judder. I have spent hours reading on the web to see about solutions, and am mainly trying this program called DXtory which does something by keeping your frame rate locked at 75 or so.

Long story short, any thoughts on judder...are you having any? what do you think about my solution etc?

I had posted this awhile ago on reddit: http://www.reddit.com/r/oculus/comments/2cnas5/supersampling_the_dk2_2560x1440_in_elite_dangerous/

This was before the new NVidia built in stuff. I've tried to use the DSR stuff but for some reason on my Rift it keeps trying to scale only the Y not the X. Has anyone else seen that?

As for color changes on the Font I have noticed very little difference personally, and it just makes the rest of the game harder to play. I'd like to be proven wrong but I haven't found a configuration that really makes a significant difference.

excellent post agathorn. This pretty much fixed everything for me. WOW is it nice in this setting and, while not perfect, the text is almost perfect as well!

only issue is, I still get a bit of juddering. Should I turn down the graphic settings in game to medium or something? Remember, I'm using superclocked 980 gtx brand new comp/processor, close to top of the line...just not using SLI but my one card is pretty damn strong. I can go 10 minutes in the combat training simulator with zero judders...and then suddently it will get REAL bad for 2 minutes, and then go away again. It is inconsistent and I'm guessing is from the frames changing.

Honestly I turn every setting to minimum. I used to play on Ultra, and my rig could handle it in Beta, but I found that the quality difference between Ultra and Minimum *in the rift* is extremely little. But while in Ultra I might do 70-75fps, in minimum I can lock hard and fast on 75fps with it ever dropping and the difference in *feel* is incredible. I won't go back.

ok. thats good to know. Two questions my man.

1 - Do you think that is SPECIFICALLY what reduces juddering?

2 - I get some juddering when using other APPS found on the oculus website such as "welcome to oculus" and "sightline." It seems as if I get it fixed some by using programs such as DXtory. Any thoughts on tactics to get other APPS to work as well as Elite does and reduce juddering? How can we reduce juddering in these apps that dont always have graphics settings like in ED?

You have seriously sped up my understanding and enjoyment of DK2 and ED. Just in between these posts I've already completely improved my performance with the supersampling and now reducing my graphics settings down. Thanks again. Wish all communities were this helpful!

You can make big differences to your performance outside of tweaking in game graphics settings in a few ways...
1. Disable monitor
2. Overclocking cpu and GPU
3. Playing around with NVIDIA control panel 3D settings... By setting things to give max performance rather than max quality, you can squeeze a few more FPS out the Rift and maybe get rid of your juddering :)

Yes I have to agree, both SlackR and Agathorn posted really helpful replies, thanks a lot for that, guys!

may I ask what specific recommendations you could give for those various settings on the NVIDIA Control Panel -> Manage 3D Settings ?

thanks!

im not at my rig right now, but if you look at the blurb that appears when you hover over each function, it is fairly intuitive how to maximise performance over quality. Its also a case of trial and error... For example some people say to set pre-rendered frames to 1, others to set to allow program to decide. Some say turn off Vsync and triple buffering, but I have both turned on.
For most of the settings that allow it, i have the ED program make the call.
