Discovery Scanner - Okay to drop it?

I feel like that's taking up a crucial inner part of the ship -- I rarely use it and I KNOW I would used a shield cell far more often.

Have any of you dumped the scanner? If so, why?

I started with a basic (=500Ls scanning range) discovery scanner and an intermediate (=1000Ls scanning range) discovery scanner in the Founders World.
I sold the basic one and use of course the intermediate version.
Additionally i bought a detailed surface scanner because i focus on exploring.
So it depends what your plans are...

I don't understand why these scanners take valuable internal slots, while the wake scanner, cargo scanner and KW scanner go into utility mounts.

You have complete freedom to tweak the innards of your ships as you see fit: if you're not using it, ditch it for something that will see use. At the moment my Asp is rigged for trading whilst I upgrade it for exploring, with the final planned upgrade being an advanced scanner, detail scanner and fuel scoop. I don't need so many cargo bays when exploring, I don't need the scanners when trading.

Ditched it for my trade ship(s). The payouts you get from the discovery scanner are either ~600 credits, if you just ping the core sun in a system you pass through on your route, or ~4000 credits on avg if you spend like an hour or more discover-scanning the entire system..

Totally not worth it.

You have more internal slots in a Cobra than Utility mounts, so I for one am very happy my discovery gear goes there :)

As others have already mentioned, absolutely no need for one if you just plan on doing combat/trading, especially now we have multiple ships to configure. On the flip side, don't do what I did... On a whim I decided to head to the Pleides Nebula in my Type-7, when I got there I couldn't find the black hole, searched for over an hour, did not even have the basic D-Scanner.

Still had an enjoyable time cruising through the Nebula, but as soon as I got back I bought an Advanced D-Scanner for the Type-7

Personally I keep mine but that's so when SC around a system I every 500 ls or so fire it off. even with out doing a fly to target and explore it I get around 2,000 cr a system where I find objects - when doing multiple system jumps thats more than I would make from the extra 2 T cargo sapce

The first thing I do when starting new in a Sidewinder is remove both guns and the scanner.

That saves 6 tons weight, and means with 6 tons cargo my laden range is what my old unladen was with guns and scanner. Great for running missions or finding decent little trade runs until moving on to a new ship.

I dumped it, but soon replaced it with the Advanced Discovery scanner, and added the detailed suface scanner and fuel scoop. I fly an Asp with 72 tons space left, and I really need the additional revenue and fuel savings to ensure good profitable journeys.
If you just going to haul between to systems, drop it like a stone and cargo space all the way. To be honest, a few rares, a few bounties across 6-7 jumps should easily net some cash, and dropping those systen data's at the end is just as profitable over the sake a a few tons of cargo :)

You really only need it if you are exploring. Remember, you can buy it back if and when you need it.
