Please stop pushing out patches in the multiple GB's!

Patches are the size they need to be, stop moaning, moan if there's no patch for issues after 6 months but not because FD are supporting the game.

You must be seeing something completely different, is your client getting corrupted? All of the last patches were minimal.

EDIT: I'm not even sure the game has multiple GBs lol

Hi,
Love the game so far, but my biggest complaint is that the patches put out are in the order of multiple gigabytes! It seems like it's downloading the entire game again every time a patch is out.

Pretty much every night this week I've got home from work, spent the evening with the missus doing mundane life things all the while looking forward to playing Elite when I'm done, only to discover a massive patch needs to be downloaded, leading me to playing something else for the evening.

My connection is 10MBit (1mb/s if I'm lucky) so it's not too bad, but when I have 2 hours a night to play, and the patches take 1:30 or beyond to download, it leaves me with no time.

I don't think it's acceptable to keep pumping out giant patches, so please consider breaking things up a bit for those of us who can't get fibre in their area. :)

what game are you patching? because since the last gamma update all patches have been tiny.....

Patches are the size they need to be. No more, no less. Its not like you can say to the compiler "Look compiler, there is someone on the forums worried about the size of their downloads. Can you perhaps be a little more compact when compiling please?"

Oh, and the 1990's called, they want their download speeds back :D (Sorry, accept that some people have to deal with substandard ISPs.... i can understand, i live in Russia - we only switched from pulse dialing hells bells 6-7 years ago)

This patch took 10 seconds on my 100 Mb line, which means less than 2 mins on yours, you have a problem I guess ?? And it wasn't even 1 GB let alone multiple GB, where did you get these figures from ?

Patches are relatively small.

Most of the patching process you see is actually applying and verifying game files. That is why it's taking longer than expected.

It doesn't just download and it's done. After each segment is downloaded, it applies it to the game files, and then downloads some more.

That's why you may see the random spikes in speed to the 100mb/s+ It depends on your HDD R/W speed

Maybe start downloading when you are doing stuff with the wife/missus?

Eh... I think you're confusing MBs and GBs ... the patches haven't been anywhere close GBs unless you've skipped patching/installing since beta (pre-gamma).

Erm.... A patch is the size it is.. It's a patch to fix something you can't just release a bit of it..

That said most of the patches after 1.0 have been pretty tiny. I am on fibre but even downloading the whole 1.0 client took less than 10 mins ... I don't think I've waited longer than a minute for a patch....

I can understand your woes, but I do not think it is the size of the patch. I think it may be a server connection issues. The update yesterday took me 45 minutes to download. It was hovering ~.04mb for 44 minutes, then jumped to 5mb and downloaded in 3 minutes. I just run the program when I get home, so any updates will be done when I am ready to play.

It may seem like it, but instead it is verifying the files you do have and only downloading what it needs to.. at least that's what it appears to be doing for me.. each patch has downloaded in < 1 minute.

GB's? LOL! I have decent internet (500mbit/s down) but these patches come down in a few seconds so they arent big. A couple MB tops. Maybe around 10-50MB for these updates? Would be neat if the size was shown actually, but they arent big.

Perhaps there's an issue with my install then...The DL speed of the launcher was near 1mb/s and it took well over multiple hours to download, for both 1.02 and 1.03.

I'll take a look tonight.

As for those saying "patches are what they are", there's many methods of patching tech and from my perspective it looked like their patching method was to simply resupply all the data without performing a diff on the files and injecting changes. Please don't defend bad practices though, if that had been their method of patching that would be extremely bad (which is why I felt I had to call them out on it).

Clearly there's another issue here anyway and it looks like it's redownloading the game each time, perhaps my local install has corrupt files or something.

all fair points :)
But you got it wrong and posting big headlines and misinformation will get you these replies, next time do your homework before coming out guns blazing.
