I turned off orbit lines, then 10 minutes later, I decided to turn them back on.

I suppose I enjoy seeing the look of the orbit and the lines also give me a sense of direction.
I guess it took seeing them off for a bit to realize how much I like them instead, you cant see planets anyways from more than 10 light seconds away.:D

Yeah, I agree. I still don't see how they were immersion breaking, a hud should exist in such a capacity... especially if you're exploring a huge system. Granted, I don't think my version of immersion is the same as a lot of the folks here.

I think many people who thought no lines was a good idea will come to realize how useful (dare I say necessary) they really are after playing without them for a little while.

Is it possible to turn them off now ?
I'm on holidays and won't log in until well after new year...

Perhaps so, but I intend to make full use of that toggle ;)
Thankfully they didn't make it a graphics option.. and allowed easy access to it.

Q. I can't log in for a few hours, I know its in the right menu but is there a keybind for it too? Anybody checked?

With the canopy shattered I liked the challenge of landing on a space station, which is a tiny blue dot in supercruise. No info, no data, just aim at it and try to guess the best speed settings while approaching. Once you do a few, you will appreciate the visual aid of the HUD, but flying without it is also great.

You could already turn them off... just by getting your front window blown out. It looks better without but its not really immersion breaking having them on as its your ships computer generating them.

I'm torn between the less ugliness without and the practicability of having them on. Maybe less intrusive would be a nice balance. More faint, and only visible in circumstances where it makes sense to see them.

No direct keybind that I could find.

Exactly. I thought they were part of the hud.

At least now you have the option. I enjoy super cruising around a system, whizzing past planets at close proximity and sometimes those orbit lines often spoilt it for me, so now I have the best of both worlds.

jolly good show Pennyblack, that would go in the category of giving a man a fish v/s teaching him how to fish, or the give a man's fire, he's warm for the evening, light the man on fire, he's warm for the rest of his life :p

and OP, i always thought, personally it feel a bit odd without the lines to get the bearings (e.g. which side the station is on of a planet you approach) of course its nice to be able to turn it off for those commanders that are addicted to photography. i like the feature that they fade out when you slow down tho.

Personally I prefer the orbit lines on, as it helps me get from A to B. But I can appreciate the viewpoint of other commanders who don't like them, so credit to FD adding a toggle that makes us all happy. Well, apart from the whiners who complain about it taking a long time to include this feature. My god, come on, even when FD come up with the goods to what probably wasn't a priority compared to getting the game ready for launch some people STILL complain. FD, you just can't win with some people LOL Great work guys, amazing game :)

I'm still not sure about the purpose of the orbit lines, or what to use them for :/

Just for starters:

They give better feedback on how fast you are approaching a target since the actual object will tend to remain a speck until you get right on it.
Also, for exploring, most bodies will tend to all lie in the same orbital plane so having the orbit lines helps narrow the search for other undiscovered objects.

I admit, no lines could be nice for just going on joyrides around a system, but for real navigation I think they are invaluable.

I love having them off. For some things you might need them, but for my style of play I don't. Thanks for giving me that option.

Space looks much bigger and emptier this way.

I use them a lot.. they help with sense of location and while exploring visually for undiscovered planets. But it's nice to have the option.
