Viper anyone?

I'm pretty sure we've had this argument before, but for the sake of those who might be deluded into thinking the Cobra is best ship for any role, I'll reiterate that this is not always the case.

You cannot ignore the inferior weapon placement, acceleration, or lateral/vertical/reverse speed of the Cobra when assessing it's capabilities v.s the Viper. Yes, the Cobra has it's share of advantages as well, but it's not all advantages, and it's disadvantages are not trivial ones.

And if combat is what you really want, FAR superior hardpoint placement for fixed weapon convergence, which makes a HUGE difference if you're hunting with fixed alpha strike weapons.

true, and far inferior hardpoint placement for gimbal placement for turning battles, because the weak weapons are on top, which makes a HUGE difference when you try to win a 1vs1 duel which will happen every time you do not kill during alpha strike

Viper hardpoint setup is closer together and give you a tighter reticle area allowing your shots to be closer packed and land on target.

I love my viper! only thing ill trade it for is a Viper Mk III ;)

yes obviously. I can prob destroy your sidewinder in one min or so cause its so low in armor. Viper is really strong if you are a bounty hunter. Cobra is a good all around ship but viper is definitely the better fighter imo. Just beware cargo space isn't that great on it.

The down sides to the Viper are a small fuel tank and short jump range. It's a fighter and not really any thing more.

If you go for a Cobra it will cost a LOT more to get something as good in combat, but it's a much better all-rounder. So far I've spent about 2 million on my Cobra and it still hasn't got the very best equipment.

The Viper only had one significant nerf as far back as I can remember.

It's boost speed is second only to the Cobra, while it's acceleration, lateral, and vertical thrust are the best you'll find. It's only weakness, as far as maneuverability goes, is it's relatively poor pitch rate.

It has much better hardpoint placement than the Cobra. It's not starving for power either.

You can somewhat overcome the pitch rate deficiency by throttling in the blue and going FA off to make the turn. If you time it right, most of the time you wont be out turned. Also making sure you are at or below your thruster's optimal mass makes a huge difference. I love the ship, it'll tear through npc's and you rack up some hefty bounties quick. However, it does take some creds to get it going like others have said.

You will need a lot more over-head to kit it out properly. Maybe 4-5x the cost of the ship for the good equipment.

This make sure when you buy the viper, you have some extra cash like 60k or so to put in some multicannons, definitely better thrusters, other upgrades like power, shield dispensers and stuff.

Ive spent about mil on my viper, maxed out multis and pulse then everything else thrown into speeding that beast up. Last stop will be A type FSD, but its 500k. Ultimately it's amazing for bounty hunting until you hit something the size of a Conda. It tore my shields up and I barely dented it. Got out with 40% hull and and used up all my shield batteries. Perhaps a testimony to my skill but I found it a bit outgunned :)

I was considering the Cobra tbh, but doesnt it fly like a barge?

Only applicable if you insist on using gimbaled weapons in the class 2 slots, which is exactly where the Cobra doesn't need them.

Also, I have several dozen PvP kills in my Viper, and I don't think I've been in a "turning battle" with another player since Beta 1. Turning battles are to be avoided in the Viper as they do not leverage the ship's main strength (superior thruster performance).

small fuel tank

I always down grade to a 2T tank so I can top off without having to worry about another 2T of dead weight.

The trick isn't to try to improve the pitch rate, it's to minimize the amount of turning you have to do. Learning to use thrusters whenever possible is one of the keys of doing well with the Viper.

The Cobra and Viper fly very differently and rely on almost entirely different styles for best effect. If you go from an Eagle or Cobra into a Viper and try to out turn everything like you're used to, you will not do well.

I found the viper much better than cobra for combat, the speed and hardpoint placement makes it superior, also much smaller cost. Much better at fighting Elite Anacondas than the Cobra because of the smaller target and superior speed.

The only downsides for me so far is that is not really useful for trading/exploring/mining. So it is just like a Cobra but made only for combat, sacrificing versatility.

upgrading for 3millions sound like elitism to me. viper is just fine standard or with 100k in upgrades too.

Viper pilot here too. I would scrape together a bit more credits to ensure you can kit your viper decently and afford the insurance cost if/when you die.

I love my Viper, have it pimped out pretty well and it's the ship that I've had the most fun in so far. I have an ASP that I use for exploration and some trading, everyone says the ASP sounds great, but it's not a patch on how the Viper sounds. I've had a Cobra before, very well upgraded and while it's a good all round ship the weapon aim is inferior to the Viper, it's too spread out. I love the Cobra for it's versatility, but if I had to pick between being versatile in a Cobra or not so much in a Viper I'd pick the Viper any day, the fun factor is huge. It's true that the jump range on the Viper is a bit low and the cargo space isn't all that much, but you're in a fighter, not a freighter, set your expectations properly and you'll love it.

Buy a cobra and save up for 1.5mil so you don't have to waste time in a stock viper.

Trust me, you don't want to fly a stock viper...
