FSD Jump Range Running Out

I'm still a newbie so I apologize if this is a stupid question and if it's been asked before. I did some searching on Google and couldn't find anything, so hopefully this isn't a duplicate.

Anyway, I was jumping around in my Viper until eventually I ended up in a system that had no stations or planets, only stars. Unfortunately, I ran out of FSD "jump range" and was trapped inside this system. My only resort was to self destruct and respawn, which completely blew my balance as I'd just spent most of my cash on a new FSD (how ironic).

My question is, when the FSD jump range runs out, what can you do? Do fuel scoops recharge the FSD, or do they charge overtime, or not at all? Or are you just completely ?

Thanks for the help! ^^

Never be without a fuel scoop.

Better yet, never be without a fuel scoop AND enough fuel to at least get out of where you got in, incase you can't scoop fuel from that (brown dwarf) star.

not quite sure, but if you didn't refuel at a station then what happened is you ran out of fuel. Fuel scoops are almost vital if you go off into the black where there are next to no stations/outposts.

Hope this helps

Can one fly in supercruise towards the nearest system with a refueling station and thereby reduce the distance and fuel requirement for the jump? Of course it would take many hours to fly lightyears this way, but if it's viable it might be an alternative to losing much credits via self destruct.

EDIT: Oh, what am I saying, of course supercruise also takes fuel, so forget my stupid ramblings. Sorry.

Fuel scoop lets you fill up the fuel tank by skimming nearby stars and I think) gas giant planets etc. So you are unlikely to get stuck anywhere. There are supposedly a few star types you can't skim from though.

You cannot fly between systems in supercruise.

So, will the fuel scoop refill the FSD too or just the main fuel tanks? I had plenty of fuel (I was still on my main tank), I just couldn't jump out of the system.

Scooping fills the main tank but not the reserve. The reserve is used for in system travel and refills from the main tank when depleted. The thinner bar is the reserve.

Flying in SC towards another system doesn't reduce the length of jump needed to get to that system.

Disappointing, somehow.

Yes. People have been trying since... well, since we've been able to access more than one star system. :)

Though I haven't personally tried in the release version; it's just possible that they've changed things to allow it.

IIRR there's a pair of systems in the Beta bubble that are closer together than the infamous Hutton Orbital is from the Centauri jump entry point.

Can you remember where or what names they were? I'm curious to see such close systems, I don't think I ever saw systems closer than 4 Ly -ish.

Okay, so to clarify, the smaller line (which I've edited into the blue colour) is the reserve tank and the ten rectangles are the main tank, correct?

Ayup!

correct. Frustrates me that scooping doesn't fill that, too. I really noticed it the first time I refilled my Viper after a jump then docked... and my fuel bill was several thousand credits. All to top off the reserve...

(didn't bother 'wasting' those credits BTW)

In another session, I was flying around a 'new' system scanning things and noticed I was down a pip on the main, even though I had scooped before leaving the main star. The reserve had topped off while I was dashing back and forth across the system, hunting wabbits... err, I mean, planets.

PS: Please note that you cannot scoop from all classes of stars. Brown and White Dwarfs are your Viper's bane when it comes to long distance travel. Also, while the bargain basement 300 credit scoop will work, you will want to upgrade to a class 2 as soon as you can find and afford one. Makes scooping much quicker.

Fuel costs either came way down, or I am misremembering the bill.
Not sure what it exactly depends on. The ship you're sitting in seems to matter. My Adder has refuel costs of like 200cr for 50% of the main fuel tank. Recently I switched to a Cobra MK III and now less than 10% fuel tank cost like 800cr to refill already. Even considering that the Cobras fuel tank is double the size compared to the Adder, it still seems like it also uses more expensive fuel. ^^

I think I am not remembering correctly for the large fuel bill. I was in the middle of a long series of jumps that was taking me through systems with brown dwarf primaries on my way to find an imperial planet (about 100+ ly from my starting system). I was on a quest to turn in some imperial bounties. The next several jumps in range also appeared to be brown dwarfs, so I stopped at the only outpost in the current system for fuel. Turns out, the second system after that was a small red dwarf. Oh well. Better safe than stranded.
