pirate killing mission

Hi guys, have I done something wrong or did the game just go weird on me....

Took a mission to kill 4 pirates in a given system, jump to system, take out 4 wanted ships and still fail mission. Is there a difference between wanted and pirates? How can you spot a pirate?

Cheers

From my limited experience, pirates (as far as that mission are concerned) are the ones who scan you for cargo first, generally with a comm line like 'What treats are you carrying' or similar. If you look in the mission tab it will say how many you've killed, and when you get your quota you'll get a message front and centre telling you so.

I had this problem too, you need to go into USSs for them to count. You'll find ones with a trader type ship (maybe with a couple of escorts in formation) and a bunch of pirates. I KWS'd the pirates but I'm not sure if that's necessary. When you kill them you'll see a count added in your transactions tab. I also got an alternative mission in one of the USSs from a rival faction but you can just ignore that if you want.

Pirates can be identified in any of three ways. First you can check which minor faction they belong to, factions with words like gang, mafia, posse, pirate etc. in their names will usually count for this mission. The second method is anyone who asks you for cargo is a pirate and will count. The third method is to target their subsystems (default 'y') and see if they have piratical gear, in my experience those with one or more of the following pieces of kit, FSD interdictors, cargo scanners, hatch breakers will usually count for the mission. Hope that helps.

You don't need to be in USS, but can also be in nav beacons or extraction sites.

Ah ok, thanks for the heads up guys. I'm actually finding I can make cash now by taking down these shieldless wanted types. Largest bounty so far was 19k using a warrant scanner. Feels like frontier kept this in to give people a hand up

Pirates and wanted can be indeed different. You best bet will be going to unidentified signal sources, 9 times out of 10, wanted people in them are pirates.
