Viper anyone?

I think it's feels like flying a old dodge challenger. It also has a bit of rusty interior often.

I guess that's because of the spilt beer on the floor ;):

I really wish they start making cockpit skins at some point - mine is golden - it deserves an interior like this to go along with that:

So how many credits should you really need to pick up a viper (with all the good mods) to make it ready for bounty hunting? 1 million? More?

Basic upgrades are rather cheap so I'd say you should be fine from 500 k upwards. Don't remember how much mine was (in the Asp atm), but I think slightly above 3 million.

i was flying an eagle and upgraded to viper. I have around 400bounties now. Viper fully upgraded. 2 shield cell banks.

The viper just can not die. only way to die is to crash on something without shields or run out of air. you dictate the battles. all you need to do to get away is all pips on engines and 1-2 boosts.no npc can catch you.
I have made 1milion in 1 nav beacon without getting out. hull 100%. intense battles but it never spawned that many anacondas and pythons again. one anaconda gave 160k? somewhere around that,
love this ship.

edit: i use 4 pulse lasers, 2 medium fixed, and 2xclass 1 gimbaled.

Why 4 pulse lasers and not 2 pulse and 2 gimballed multi cannons?

Viper hardpoint setup is closer together and give you a tighter reticle area allowing your shots to be closer packed and land on target.

I love my viper! only thing ill trade it for is a Viper Mk III ;)

Wait, there are Viper MKIII's?

I bought the Viper and it is great, much easier to kill asps, adders, and Cobras now and I hardly take any damage normally only 0-5% and all I upgraded was the power, engine and 2x shield bank cells.

I purchased my viper before I knew what path I wanted to take in the black. I found it pretty expensive to kit, and it's default range had me trapped in a very small (Three systems) section of the galaxy. I had to do some work to get my default viper to I longer range frame shift drive to get out of that section of space. Currently in my Cobra and while not as quick or maneuverable, it is a good all around ship for what I am currently doing.

I have tried Sidewinder, Eagle, Viper and Cobra.
All three first were amazing...specially the eagle(but has a lot of limitations)

But the Cobra didn't felt like a specialized fighter...So i went Viper...Im upgrading getting more A items, I can take Anacondas without issues...But always carry your chaff and at least one Shield Cell

I did the pre-order so only have been playing for a few days. I thought I'd progress form Sidewinder to Hauler and skip the Viper, but since I have been running around in my free-gle for the last few nights I'm thinking I might want to get me a Camaro/Viper. Time to turn & burn before we get too settled in to mundane trade routes. :p

RedMax aka Cmdr MaxHeadroom

The Viper is only arguably better than the Cobra in combat. It's not clear cut, but it should be. The Cobra has much more cargo, it should be worse in combat, but it's not.

yep it's a decent ship once you spent 3 millions 500k, good speed, normal maneuverability, the drawbacks are extreme tho: Power starving, 13 Ly jump range, very few and small internals, not the fastest ship, extreme weight punishment, and only 1 profession available Bounty hunter

rather than suffer from it's extreme weaknesses and have to spent a lot of money into it, you could also spent 2 millions on a Cobra, and do everything better than the viper with a lot of other possibilities, like 20 Ly jump, every upgrade without any problem in power or weight, extreme internals, more tanky, use the weapons you want, with better Warrant scanner, extreme fuel tank, every profession available at the same time...

all in all, the Cobra: is the best fighter, the fastest ship and can do everything else at the same time
the viper: is only good for fight, second best in speed, and can only do bounty hunter (can't even use more than a class C Warrant scanner tho), with incredible weaknesses and needs the perfect sacrifice build with maxed upgrades to make it decent.

The Viper we have now is the Mk III.

the man who designed it must feel bad now, so much work for nothing more than "i'm gonna sell my viper once i can buy a Cobra in a couple hours"

some people will stick to it tho, either they are blind, or like me, they just love this ship to much even if it's weak and wait for a miracle buff, in that sense i guess that the designer of the viper must feel proud to make us stick with such a weak ship

Viper rocks when you can throw 1m CR at it and stick decent modules in it. Keep saving until you have 500k spare and then get a Cobra, the extra cargo hold will help you get extra cash much sooner, and you can then get a viper later on.

If you want a fighter get an Eagle, as it's much easier to kit out, is more maneuverable, and is also great fun.... :)

You can't use cargo space potential as an indicator of combat prowess otherwise everybody would fly an Eagle and expect to win every time.

The Viper is (likely) to be a ship made for the *really* good pilots. It should be that way. I don't doubt there are Viper pilots out there who simply could never lose to even great Cobra pilots.

in elite the prowess is easy to see: Best at everything small ship = Cobra, Best at everything medium ship = ASP, Best fighter ship = Python

you can skip everything else for pure efficiency, you can stick to ships that are not listed for preferences

15 ships and only 3 should be used for pure efficiency, sad right ?

Thats because the Cobra isnt a specialized fighter. Its an all rounder ship. :) Decent at many things. fighting, mining, trading, smuggling.

Don't listen to them. Save up for a Cobra. It's the Tiger tank of the game. Or the Millenium Falcon.

Viper is a great ship, kitted out with 500k shields and cell banks (all upgraded modules and weapons) you can take even take down Anacondas without breaking a sweat.

wrong, the Cobra is specialised in everything, you have every advantages without any drawback, buy a Cobra, be a clone in a sea of Cobra where every other ships of this size will be dirt beside you
