Investment in a larger ship

My current playthrough is going well. I'm investing from ship to ship and have just gone from the VIPER to the COBRA, which the game properly forces on you as being one of the best ships in the game.

Main point I want to ask, I want to invest in a big ship - but I'm interested to know what I actually will get out of having a bigger ship? Just is it better for the shipping game? Or can I still be a hideous threat to those who are WANTED in the game?

Your thoughts.

A bigger ship will get you more hardpoints (you'll probably want to upgrade to an ASP, Clipper, and eventually Python for bounty hunting) which will make you more effective against big guys. However, just getting a bigger ship isn't necessarily good. For example, combat-wise the Lakon Type-9 only has one extra medium hardpoint over the Cobra, for the low price of about 100 million credits.
 
Bigger ships also come with the disadvantage of bigger repair bills. If my hull so much as gets scratched in my Asp, whatever bounty I'm working on is likely going to end up a loss (profit wise). Getting something like a Type-6, but then also keeping your cobra on the side is a pretty good way to go, so you can utilize the money-making power of the bigger ships to fund your playing around with your smaller, more combat-capable ship.

- Best at everything big ship: ASP
- Best fighter ship: Python

For jump distance, Asp indeed (not to mention, just love the Growl of its engines). Packs serious punch too when equipped for combat.

Your idea about having both is a good one. I had a Type 6 and a Cobra both well spec'd and just sold them both today to finance an Asp. I am loving the Angry Bumblebee :)
 
The only point I can see in having a big ship is to speed up the money making for a collection of smaller ships....

Currently running a Type 7 and a Viper, both fully upgraded (in game net worth of just over 40m), plan is to get a Type 9, park it somewhere safe, then work on getting combat fit Python/Asp/Cobra/Sidewinder.

I've never heard anyone say "oh, that Anaconda is a great fighting ship", so I think I'll work on building out a smaller fleet first :)
 
To put some numbers on it. The insurance on my Viper is 150k, which is a lot until you consider that it is less than the profit for one run in a Type 7, I.e. about 6 minute's effort.

Over the lifetime of my ED play, having a big trader will pay for itself many times over in effort saved.

Well then, I guess this is a topic in itself, I think a lot of players will immediately think bigger is better.

So, investing is probably for the best? Obviously I look at the Anaconda and thing - I WANT TO OWN ONE. "My other ship is an Anaconda".

Oh don't get me wrong, they are big, beautiful and I want one, but there is nothing in game (so far) that they seem best suited for. Until that happens they are bottom of the shopping list...
 
The Python is an incredible ship, for its size and the hard points it packs, it is incredibly maneuverable. It's the first ship I found I would choose to run with shields and other kit, instead of maxed out for trading, because the cargo capacity was adequate for fast enough credit making (was running non shielded craft before). I was having smaller combat craft and keeping a trading vessell that kept getting larger (a bit like the dildos we have to choose to be dry humped with on election day, where we have to pick the smallest one), that was until I got into a Python, and now I do both combat and trading in that one ship setup. Eventually will go for a type9 for its current ultimate trading potential, but the Python is so good, I think im going to linger. I'll have to get myself a cobra or viper on the side, as you get used to the maneuverability of the bigger ships and get blown away once you sit back into one of the hot hatches.

I loved low level flying the space station structure and other obstacles in a smaller ship, and only having used a Python now for a few weeks starting to miss that, will have to get myself a smaller ship again that doesn't have a hefty repair bill like the Python. 2% hull damage (easy to get from a fuel scooping misshap) costs around 50k (drunk and forgot the exact figure, but im now allot more careful scooping). Fuel costs are immense in a Python so a fuel scoop really is a must, plus if you venturing on a route you haven't been before, you have far less worries of running out of fuel (as long as don't jump into the unknown with too little fuel and end up at a star that has burnt off all its hydrogen, keep enough in the tank to get to a star that you know hasn't).
