Viper or Eagle?

Upgrade you Eagle. The Viper is a *wonderful* ship but any ship only really shines when you can afford to upgrade it a bit.
You'll not lose any money upgrading your Eagle as equipment gets sold back at 100% of the buy cost. I can't give an exact figure, but I'm guessing at around 500k will be enough to buy you a Viper with 'C' class equipment in most of the slots, that'll be worth upgrading to.

i'm gonna go and say the viper. it's painful with the loaned pewpew guns, but if you rip those off and put 4 nice guns (even all class 1's) on and grab some of the cheaper upgrades she starts to pull the cash in nice and fast.
i think i started close to 200K trade in for the viper too, so it was very close to stock. it's now almost worth a million.
but save the eagle, it's a great ship in it's own right and they fly differently. if i want to throw myself into a dogfight then i'll use the eagle, it's the most nimble ship in the game

Depends on what you want to do.
If you want to bounty hunt properly you will need a kw scanner and a wake scanner, you can't put both of these on an eagle.
The viper is a great ship but not everyone likes it, look at all the viper vs cobra threads
A viper only really needs an uprated thruster and 4 better guns to be viable as a hunter, not as great as a tricked out one but it would serve. I found the eagle to be way to under gunned, it was a challenge to kill anything larger then a cobra before it would run away. I was using 2 fixed bursts under the wings and a gimballed multicannon in the top mount
I strongly suggest to upgrade the Eagle first. Put in the best Power Distributor you can afford, replace life support and sensors with D rated ones, ugrade everything else to D or C (depending on how much money you have left), and of course get a set of weapons that you like. Some mix of pulse lasers and muti-cannons is very effective.
A well kitted viper will only cost around a mil.
Eagle first, highly fitted it's an often underestimated killer, good for bounty hunting smaller ships.

Once you flew a well fitted Viper you won't go back. Screw the overrated Cobra. Everyone's flying that boring all-rounder but if you wanna do bounty hunting, go for the Viper.

Go for the viper, you won't regret it. The eagles hull is too weak, like tinfoil. The viper tho....
The viper is easily the best fighter in the game. The cobra is a good all rounder, but the viper is a far better vessel and built purely for combat.
Viper is my favorite. But the eagle is fun too. If I could do it again, I would fly the eagle until had enough cash to buy a c-upgraded viper. The lower fsd's are a pain in the ass.
You need money for upgrades, don't buy the Viper till you got at least $500k spare to spend

I like all three of them, Eagle, Viper and Cobra and have one of each, and switch between them on a whim. They are all great ships in their own right. And whoever says the Cobra is so good that the Viper were redundant, I have flown both in combat and they are worlds apart in terms of handling. Their martial prowess is pretty much equal, but the feeling is entirely different.
The only thing, however, I would really like to see changed in this magic triangle, is the Eagle to get a speed buff.
very much so, when i got my viper the station did not have any so by the time i had it kitted out ot hte best i could affoard (mostly C with a A rated distributor, 2 fixed C2 Pulses, 2 gimballed C1 multicannons) I was 20 tons over the optimal thrust of the stock thrusters, swapped those up to C last night, amazing difference.
