Fuel Scoop...

Hi commanders, anyone know how to use the fuel scoop? You can't add it to a fire group so not sure how to utilise? :S

Just fly close enough to a star and it will activate itself. I usually scoop when jumping between systems, since you land so close to the star.

From my experience, a good way to use it without frying your ship with heat damage is to get close enough to activate it and then orbit the star while yawing left or right to mitigate heat damage and increase scooping efficiency.

I fly "upside down" as in head towards the centre of the star and keep the orbit line at the level of the top of my canopy. Judicious use of throttle and pitch gets me filled up in a few seconds. I do it as the first thing after every hyperspace jump so my tank is always topped up.

if you fly to the star until the fuel transfer gets above 10.00/s then press X to cut movement you will sit there happily scooping at that same amount without getting a high temp.. I can usually do it at temp 95% it only takes a few mins if you do it after every hyperspace.

Best to use heat as a guide and not scoop rate, as scoop rate is highly variable.

At 95% heat level an A3 scoop will do ~120 kg/s.

Also, you usually don't take damage until ~140% heat level, if you keep exposure time short.

Reading that, i realize i'm hungry. ;)

Keep your speed down, edge it up as you approach, drop the speed as you get towards 100 on the heat and you'll find the maximum your scoop is capable of while maintaining steady temp. Sit back and wait but keep an eye out for pirates etc. As Morbad said, don't use scoop rates quoted above as there are different scoops available.

Only works when FSD is engaged. Fly into the star until temp starts to slowly tick up, full reverse thrust will keep you at min FSR speed. Run away before 150% cabin temp as hull damage will follow.

this was actually aimed at someone who has not used a fuel scoop before but whatever

Yes just don't try it the first time after a night at the pub with friends and by thinking of doing in a go ;)
Ah, Legal Drugs how I curse you!
