Jumped too Close to a Star - DON'T PANIC!!!!

I thought I'd post my tips for getting away with minimal damage if you've jumped too close to a star.

  1. Firstly, as the good book says DON'T PANIC - zero your throttle. While you may be taking some heat damage at this point your hull should be cooling, once the temperature gets below 135% you'll stop taking heat damage.
  2. Wait for the temperature to drop further, while your doing that, target the star using the Navigation panel and align your ship so it's pointing directly away from the star. (there should be a hollow circle in the centre of the nav compass.
  3. By this time the hull should have dropped to around 80 - 85 degrees, if not wait for it to do so.
  4. Once the temps stopped dropping hit your frameshift key.
  5. If you've followed step 2 you should see the escape vector almost perfectly aligned if not finish lining up while the engine's charging. The heat will climb past 100% again but you should jump out before it gets above 135%.

If you try frameshifting without letting the temperature settle first you risk taking more damage than you need to.

I recently met a white dwarf, that almost killed me since it seems that you are too close by default as soon as you get out of hyperspace, i tried to evade immediately but it dropped me out FSD immediately, millions of kilometers away from that damned thing, but that was still by far worse than being close to any red/brown/yellow sun.

I wasn't paying attention and dropped in too close to the white dwarf at GD 219. I used the same tactic and it worked.

Remember using the FSD raises the temperature very quickly so if you're still close to, or above 100% temp when you start, you're quickly going to get to that 135% mark and start taking more damage. My friend dropped in too close to the same star in his hauler, using my advice he escaped with his hull still at 92%.

Agree with the comment on the Binary Stars, can imagine that getting very messy ;)

Actually, i've noticed that heat damage starts at 150%

Sure your console steams up before then but no actual damage has ever been taken until I hit exactly 150% in my experience (of which there is far too much, NOTE: try not to get distracted by the telly during a hyperjump :p)

The abilty to run around in the cabin, while screaming like a little girl, is fortunately not implemented yet. Thus I can testify to stoically sitting quite still, while being pulled out of super cruise in flames. Not exactly when coming out of Hyperspace, but rather when going for a bit of fuel scooping directly after, without accounting for some intricate triangulation of vectors, or whatever you should be doing instead of going too hot into the hot zone. :)

It's also a good idea to carry a heat sink launcher at all times, just in case.
I almost never use mine, but when I do it often saves my space bum.

This.. when i saw the size of the corona I pulled so hard on the stick I almost snapped it!

To be clear there are some systems with binary (or even trinary!) pairs of stars at the jump-in point where you'll start overheating the moment you drop out due to position. Even if you come in at 0% throttle you have an overheating problem to deal with right away.

Of course starting from 0% throttle means you're not going to be making it worse right off the bat.
