Not Accidental Fire ... (and comms)

A few times now I've flown in to a a fight, chasing a wanted target and come out wanted myself. I'm well aware that stray fire can annoy the local fuzz, so I've just accepted that's what has happened and fled back to the nearest station to pay the fine (which is probably the 3300 AD equivalent price of a chocolate bar).

Today however, I see a red target that is registered as wanted and is being chased by the cops. I slap him - then get an alert giving me wanted status for hitting target X .. I checked and it was the dude with the wanted status. No authority vessels in my firing arc whatsoever. So I have to bug out and pay the fine.

How do I take this? Is this a game mechanic that I'm missing out on or have I hit a bug. I'll admit, I've just hurled myself in to the game and not doubled checked for any rules of engagement nuances - but 'red' and 'wanted' surely = 'free to slap about'.

Also -

I'm not expecting huge things here with the comms and when it works, it's great. I have found that since the back end of Gamma I've had all kinds of problems being unable to send transmissions to friends. If this is a recognised issue, I'd love to see this prioritised.

On the upside - weaving in and out the rocks in a resource extraction point still rates as one of my favourite space combat experiences ever. Whatever the balance is that makes these experiences feel cinematic, it's working in this game! :) *positive note*

no, red means he or his faction unfriendly to you. doesn't necessarily mean that he's aggressive or wanted.
also you said he was wanted, did you confirm that on bottom left of main screen or did you confirm on left panel/contacts tab after a KW scan?

Wanted bottom left .. not KW scan (I'm guessing that would give wanted status in another system). So to my mind he's wanted locally.
Thanks for the faction unfriendly info ;)

well looks like you may have had a glitch there then, you should've been able to engage him, btw still a good idea to check left panel when they are wanted, he may belong to a faction you're trying to build rep with.

like the acorn electron avatar btw, that's what i played the original on back in '86.(well apart from sneaky games on a BBC B during computer studies at school while the teacher was out of the room) :)
