Rank progression query

Commanders!

I noticed my first mission to rank up for the Federation today. Now, I'm quite happy to gain ranks in the Federation (and take the fight to these Imperial dogs) but how does that affect your general standing in Empire systems? Do you automatically become hostile?

Is it possible to rank up in both Federation and Empire (without becoming hostile in the systems)?

not necessarily i am a recruit in the feds and have made it to master with the imps and got my Achenar permit but im avoiding getting more rep with the feds in-case it messes up my imperial standing

also when i went back to fed space to sell my spare vipers last night the stations in fed controlled space that were friendly to me were all still green and friendly.

hope this helps.

but i do think calling me a dog is a bit harsh old chap!

It's a weird system, but you can gain ranks in all 3 factions without affecting your reputation in each in a negative way (unless one requires you do perform criminal activities on the other).

I would prefer if it didn't do that personally, but it is the way it is :)

At some point it would be nice to have penalties for being chummy with multiple factions - for example to go above Baron for the Empire (say), you must loose ranks gained in the Federation or Alliance. This would allow low-level dalliances with all factions before having to make a solid commitment. Alternately, offer the player missions who's specific objectives will conflict, or could lead to the player being scanned and identified as a 'double agent'. Potentially the mission choice to defect to another side could be offered, again coming at a massive rep hit.
.
(Always irritated me in Bethesda's games (Morrowind, Oblivion et at.) that you could simultaneously be head of the Thieves, Fighters and Mages guild. I'd hope E: D gets more meaningful, and lengthy, faction choices. Ranking up almost every mission makes the whole thing seem trivial).

I'm not familiar with the background lore for Elite, but I haven't seen anything to suggest the large factions are at war with each other. Merely they are just different forms of government and culture and will defend themselves like any sovereign entity. So I personally don't see anything wrong with having friendly status with all factions.

Anyone knows how I can leave the navy? Became a recruit for testing purposes but that life is not for me unless I can backstab someone for profit :p

Empire and Federation are in a state best described as "Cold War".

If I understand correctly, the Federation and the Empire are in a 'Cold War' with each other. If that's the case, then being a high-ranked officer in both would be like being a high-ranked officer in the United States Armed Forces and the Soviet Armed Forces at the same time, during the actual Cold War. Hopefully Frontier will implement some sort of 'betrayal mechanism' in the future.

Thanks for the advice Commander. Sorry about the 'dog' stuff (Imperial scum) :)

I know a sure fire way to get yourself discharged. You put two pencils up your nose and your underpants on your head. They'll think you've gone mad and ship you home to Sol before you can say 'wibble'

well that's more like it old boy!

poor deluded federal lackey ;) remember the Emperor loves you bask in his glory! bask i say!!

The Empire really need a better vetting process for their Generals. I've killed 3 in the past two hours - how many traitors to the Emperor are there out there? Are the upper echelons of the decadent, capitalist running dog, Federal military as bad?
