Oh no !!! that just didn't happen.

In fact it did happen, to be precise yesterday evening. I was stationed in Lugh and read about a slave insurgency in Sorbago, so I decided to make it there to see what was going on.
So I took my Cobra MKIII for a ride of about 100 LY. I flew through a lot of new Sytems collecting all the data about the stars, planets and whatsoever. I got assaulted by an NPC, i made it through the fight an got him killed and got some 6K bounty for it. I finally made it to Sorbago to the only station not being in the Fight, requested docking permission, entered the station through the mail slot and got hit by, what I think, another Cobra and got FULLY BLOWN TO PIECES by the collision.
I than hit the ESC button on the keyboard and logged out of the game.
I no this is unfortunate, did that happen to you guys out there?
I probably will do the trip once more and try not to hit anybody this time :)

Sorry to hear that happen... it's happened to many of us, especially in beta when ramming was a big problem (the federal fighters were completely suicidal at one point).

A tip though: When not in combat, always run with power to your shields. If you are approaching a port, run with 4 pips to shields, as you don't need full speed to enter the hanger.
Shields will mitigate ramming damage, especially when you're in a cobra which is tougher than a lot of the smaller ships.

Srsly:
Always max shield power before approaching a station.

That is not just a tip, it's part of the regular procedure like putting one foot in front of the other when you're walking.

OK, thanks a lot guys, this one didn't come to my mind, surely I was somewhat tired from the long trip. But I will try to remember your recommendations.
See you out there.:D

Copied this from my other Post:

"Almost the same happened to me, a Anaconda decided to fly through the MailingSlot Sideways. i was sitting in my ASP with 990k Cargo and already 120speed, no time to break, tried to fly over its nose but the anaconda THEN decided it would be best to pull up the nose to the roof, well the path was blocked. Tried my best to deactivate autopilot to make a last attempt by avoiding it, eventually i made it under her nose...well my hud dissapeared and all i heared was "Eject, Eject, Eject....Boom". The Anaconda decided to throw down her Nose sandwiching my ASP between the nose and the bottom of the Mailing Slot.

i lost 1,7 Million at that Point, throwing me back to 19,7. i was so close to get my Clipper =("

Sorry for your loss... thats the reason i always equip the biggest shield possible. My Type-6 is actual equiped with an Class 5-B shield (1,5 mill cr). Takes a lot of damage before getting down. 4 pips in systems dosent´t affect your shield power... only the recharge time. So there is no need for 4 pips in shields if approching stations. Fly slow and keep an eye on surrounding ships. Release your landing gear and keep your speed at 50m/s when entering stations. Switch on your lights. Helps other players to recognize you and stay on the green side.

See you out there...

I thought pips in systems affected strength not recharge. That was how it was in Alpha and Beta and I do not recall that being changed.

Does 4 pips on your shields help? I thought 4 pips on the power distribution to shields just made them recharge faster - does it make the shields stronger too?

Two days ago I was entering Jameson Memorial with some exploration data and rare commodities. I was going in as fast as I could, like always, when I spotted an Asp filling up the airlock. I had little time to react and no space to manouver, so I lost my Cobra, data and cargo.

I learned a 100k – 200k cr lesson, I've been more careful ever since.

Jameson Memorial.. approached that in my Asp. Player Cobra came out full speed..Asp dead :( no idea if the Cobra survived. Would like to know if Sys pips affect shield strength or only recharge.

Your shield strengh is shown at the outfitting screen. My Class 5-B need/or provide more than 3.000 eneryunits. The more the better. Also an indicator is the optimum/maximum mass that can be shielded. The more, the better also. FD need to adjust this, for better understanding. And the pips in systems only affects your recharge time. How should it increase the power ? ATM we are not able to switch shield power. As example, double your shield power at the front shields if your are attacking. Vice versa the aft shield if your are attacked. Thats not implemented atm. Hope they will do...

I haven't checked in the latest Gamma/Release, but in Beta, it definitely improved the shields to have 4 pips. Not just the reloading time.

With Vipers/Anacondas fitted with at least 4 Canons, having 4 pips to the shield was the only way to survive more than 1-2 shots.

Yes, long haul trip to Achenar, no docking on the way.

Arrived, got bug where no docking pad appears, got a bit frustrated, not thinking properly turbo'd into side of station. =p

As said, its increase your recharge time (in conjunction with an better power distributor ). Not more. The amount of energy used (shield power) is fixed. If this wasen´t this way bigger shield would make no sense :)

My curiosity is killing me. Why the hell were you doing 120 inside the station?

Most ship utility systems are here, but biggest impact this makes on shields. More pips to SYS will bring back online your shields much faster if they fail(enemy fire or silent run) also your shields will be able to take much more
damage before failing, i.e., 2-3-4 pips will allow you to take 18-23-37 hits before shields will fail (numbers are only as a guide).

i did see a post where someone had taken the time to count hits before shield failure and they found a similar result and highly recommended 4 pips to shields if you are about to take a face full of fire from a hostile.

as for ramming, i can only assume that if shields can take more damage from weapons with more pips, then they can take more damage from ramming too.

so, the 4 pips to shields if you are worried about being rammed is good advice. and as for do pips help the recharge speed or damage taken, it's a yes to both and a power distributor boosts both capacity and recharge, so slap a good one of them on too!

Thanks for that ! But i cannot agree with the stronger shield part. This is my experience. It makes no sense to make them stronger. Maybe we should ask an Dev :) so if one reads by, please give a statement !
