What rank was it? If they're very low in rank then their bounty will be just as low.
Always use a KWS though, they really help.

Once you`ve scanned a wanted target, check ya contacts tab (left console) to know if the bounty is worth a fight.

Yesterday i managed to take out a Python in my Eagle. It was a fight to the death. I had to keep boosting away and recharging my shields. My reward was worth about 2000 credits.I thought i was going to get a fortune after that.
LOL Eagles are wonderful little fighters..yes but u took out a Python!
I did this once and felt overconfident so I tried a 2nd Python with a much higher rank....he incinerated me in seconds LOL....KWS are expensive but worth it...tho they tend to spook the ship scanned, NPC usually boost off from me wen I KWscan them.

Yesterday I took out a wanted "Mostly harmless" Python in my Sidewinder. Although I did let the 2/3 Federal Police Eagles that were shooting it to begin with do most of the work & moved in for the cheeky kill steal at the end, the bounty payment was around 24k
