Salavaging stuff in space -> stolen

I noted that cargo I picked up from empty space is marked stolen. Does that mean I am immediately wanted or will be refused docking permission or fired upon if I do a normal entry into a station?

If you are scanned with the cargo in your hold you will receive a fine and loss of reputation of the major faction that owns the system you are in. Depending on the cargo you may receive a 37,000+ Cr fine. If you fail to pay off your fine you will become wanted.

Until you are successfully scanned the game proceeds as normal.

Just avoid getting scanned and you'll be fine.

My tactic for getting into stations with stolen goods is as follows:
  1. Keep at a 9Km distance from the station and align myself up to the entrance
  2. Wait until I feel confident I won't smash into another ship
  3. Boost straight towards entrance
  4. Request docking permission at 7.5Km
  5. Deploy landing gear at 3Km
  6. Fly through entrance and dock as normal.

I have never been caught doing this. I have had a few close encounters with collision though.

Another way is to dock as usual on silent running (a good powerplant with low heat is needed). Try silent running in deepspace to count how much time ya have until your ships turns into toast.

I do it more or less like StephenB suggests, but don't lower landing gear until inside.

Easier way though is find the location of a pirate base with a black market. You can find a few scattered here and there in anarchy systems or out towards the edge of civilized space. There are also some regular outposts which lack any sort of SA vessels flying around, and some have black markets.

Then you can just take your time docking.

Ask yourself, if you were driving down the motorway/freeway and noticed a bunch of bicycles just there on the side of the road, after picking them up and being pulled over what would happen?

Yeah, if you get caught then you get punished. StephenB has the right advice.

I was thinking it would be a nice addition to the game if you could purchase a salvage license from a system station.
It would only allow you to salvage if you are 'clean', to prevent piracy salvaging, and only in the system you bought the license in.
Salvaged goods would not be yours to sell but would need to be handed in for a bounty back at the station
Could open up another USS activity...distress beacon/debris field, populated with pirates, and this in turn could add another career option

I still think, that if you take the goods of a wanted criminal that they should be classed as confiscated and sellable to the regular market... not just the black market - or you can hand them into station for a small reward.

Caveat for this is that any goods taken from a non wanted commander/ pilot would be classed as stolen.

Something to ponder: I'm working out of a station which has things like Black Boxes, Military Plans, etc., listed on the commodities market... as... "salvage". But you can't grab any of it off a wreck and sell it, as it is shown as "stolen". Haven't figured this little conundrum out yet.

I picked up a fair few tonnes of stolen cargo at a USS last night. I always fly to any outpost because they are not as heavily policed, if at all (and you don't need to be in an anarchy system either). I just wait for the bulletin board to list a mission requesting rare art, blueprints, black boxes (etc.) and hand them in, or just accept a mission and head out hunting. It helps that I also have a high rep in this system, so the money is quite good (about 10k+). I fly a Cobra, so a larger ship may not be able to do this because of docking space.

would be nice to have timers on stolen stuff. so we can take it. hide it in an asteroid field. come back later in a week and sell it without danger.

I think the system more like the international maritime agreements would be more interesting -- if you recover it, you could claim a reward from the owner... or seek a higher bidder at your own risk. Salvaging could be done through contract (maybe it already is, haven;t played enough :( ); or as a trigger for a mission.

Plenty of options for making it interesting.

This is one of the few issues I have with ED and has really discouraged me from much exploration. I'm not just driving down the road, I'm in deep space, in an un-named system LY from civ and by 100% certainty have picked up "stolen" goods. A fitted salvage module which strips the "stolen" tag would be the simplest solution. Roll in a a pile of ABANDONED animal meat, zap with the salvage module, and fly it back to a station.

And also just because I picked up "stolen" artwork doesn't mean I'm the thief. I'd like to be able to return it to the rightful owner or their next of kin (for a possible reward or reputation gain) ;)
