I just had an idea to make traveling galaxy "easier" but not "easy"

Maybe it is a stupid idea, but I just though how to make this whole galaxy tourism more involved and also more community driven. As of now, you can reach anywhere, but still with the limited FSD jump distance it is really big undertaking to get anywhere really far, unless you dedicate really lot of time.

So I had this idea (which I borrowed heavily from Stargate Universe) of inventing Jump Gates, that would connect to other Jump Gates. But the catch would that those gates would have to be seeded by real players and also require special kind of ship, "seeder" if you will. The second catch would be huge cost to build the actual gate, something like 30-40 million credits. And the third catch would be that the gates would connect only to other gates in 1000 Ly range and would cost money to use. This way, the travelling would become easier over time, but not fast and also not overly easy.

Thoughs?

the problem is no one would ever buy a 40 million gate when they can travel 200 light years in one jump :D
Only fraction of ships can do that and then they are heavily build for exploration. This would mean accessible travel to ships of all specs, and also the one building the gate would get some profit from it.

This has been discussed before, and no, it probably isn't happening.
And with fuel scoop, route plotting, and 10+ Ly jump range, long range travel isn't that hard. Just today I went from the Imperial-Federal border worlds to 31 Aquilae in less than 20 minutes.

To complicated. I like the basic idea but would come up with different requirements and constraints.

  • No player buildable structures!
  • No exit gates
  • Jump range is determined by the type of gate and it's jump engine and power
  • Gates consume fuel - just like your ship
  • You pay the fuel it takes the gate to jump you to the location you set
  • (Optional) A gate could be out of fuel: Bring your own
  • (Optional) A gate could be a station or anchored next to a station and the system / station could have a demand for the commodities that are required to generate the fuel or the fuel itself.

As far as I understand the problem with the jump drives in ships is their size and energy consumption which doesn't apply to a super structure like a station or gate. While it would not be possible to jump a super structure itself because of it's huge mass the structure could still init a jump for your ship with its superior reactor and bigger jump engine.

But sadly I'm pretty sure FDEV made clear that we won't see gates in this game ever. :( This is pretty disappointing because I don't even want to meet a friend ingame because I have to travel several hundred LY in the worst case and this makes it simply impossible to meet each other in an after-work gaming session of a just 1-2 hours... Also route planing is not working across larger distances because of the time it would take to compute the route quickly.

The whole game is a broken because it seems like it can't decide what it wants to be. Single player? Nope, you have to be online. Multiplayer? Nope, it's clearly messed up it's mechanics to work well for that part. :(

Which ship with which drive can do such a long jump?

It takes light 8 mins to reach earth from Sol...
It takes my ship about 35 seconds.....
It takes my ship about 1 min to jump to Alpha Centuri.... think you get my point.

Agreed,
Last weekn I managed to rush a 199ly on 20minutes, from undocking to undocking, i was using my cobra with aprox 20ly jump range and did one refuel stop :)

I think there should be some way of making the far reaches of the galaxy accessible to all players, eventually. Some of the views at the galactic core are breathtaking and a shame that only players who have the time to commit 100+ hours of continuous travel just to get out here will see them first hand. Not to mention only having one character slot too, so you're effectively cutting yourself off from all the other things the game has to offer for weeks on end on ultra deep space excursions.

I think once walking in ships is implemented and players can hitch a ride on other players ships, the introduction of an ultra long range cruise liner would be nice. Something players can pay to be a passenger on and take trips out to these places without all that tedious mucking about in hyperspace.

Unfortunatly the devs already stated that there will be no "shortcuts" of any kind in the game.

Thank god there will be Star Citizen with dedicated servers and full modding support and offline playable to fix situations like this for every body who likes to alter the core game...

Now imagine how great ED could be if it would be just offline playable and moddable so that everbody could install mods to get the game they want. But wait, we've got that awesome always online situation!

If ED would be playable offline and modable we could just put gates in as we like for our personal experience and fun. Look at how great other games do that have mod support like Skyrim. There are mods like "cities of skyrim" that improve the game experience so much!

I don't understand this comment, there already is a way!

You should have read the full paragraph to get its context. Not everyone will have the time to visit some of the far off places due the sheer size of the gameworld. 100+ hours just to reach the galactic core being one barrier for a lot of players. Unless you meant watching youtube videos of those who have been there and recorded it all, then yes you're correct, there is a way :)

I think it would be fun to incorporate some kind of geocaching into the game. Players could leave treasures/clues scattered across the universe for others to find. :)

that would make the game like eve, that game has jump gates..... NAH! like the game the way it is >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> ELITE!
