I have tried flying with it off and I just cant, even in combat. Thankfully I only pve and the AI is more than dumb enough that I never feel outmanuevered because I can't fly FA off.

Maybe once I've got a HOTAS I'll train myself to fly FA Off

Despite what people are claiming above FA-off does not allow you to turn faster. The illusion that it does stems from the fact that doing an axial rotation rather than an actual turn often brings an enemy into your sight quicker because you tend to be travelling away from them faster and thus end up with a lower relative angle of attack. Ditto for combined pitch and vertical/lateral thrust. Basically you cannot exceed the pitch rate of velocity in mid blue zone by any means, ever, except when boosting. Since you can do a serviceable axial turn in FA-on in most ships, FA-off only offers an advantage if you need to exceed the FA-on thrust envelope (e.g. go backwards at more than half speed).

Im practicing more and more. Just wish there was a HUD indicator for the speed vertically/horizontally to help out a bit. Its awesome, but takes some skill to pull off well. Its definatelly very fun when you get the hang of it. Feels like you are flying "for real". Missing an "once in a while" option in the poll. :) Since im not mastering it yet i turn it off for certain battles etc.

FA off for docking and a mixture when fighting.

I enjoy the sense of accomplishment when I dock my Asp with it off after power sliding around the nose of the station.

FAOn about 75% of the time. FAOff is for a tighter turning circle and for some advanced maneuvers. It's amazing for smuggling too if you exit SC behind a station just booost till you're in front, FAOff to turn toward the mailslot, then FAon and boost for it till you're in (be careful to brake early if in a viper or you will hit the back of the station xD)

Watch this persons videos, "Flight Assist Off" at all times, that's some awesome skills. https://www.youtube.com/user/Isinona

This is a particularly good one, although he dies in the end waiting to park at an outpost whilst his enemy get's fixed up, still some great skills here:

My, that's one skilled pilot indeed. Alas, I felt so good not crashing into the station before watching this.

And I make bad polls, who thought. Not going to make a good test in statistics this year, duh.

No offense but flying completely without FA seems stupid to me. Theres literally no reason why you should do that. Its only good off for making tactical movements in combat, thats its only purpose.

I like to drift sideways on when docking, facing the station, so that when I line up with the entrance I can re-engage FA and go straight in.

This is true ^^ - I feel we need an ED Flight Combat manual similar to the old Microprobe Flight Sims - with manoeuvre diagrams and descriptions.

I pretty much never use it in combat. I pretty much only ever activate it if I want to rake the belly of ship while firing at a different angle to my movement vector.

Sliding a Shooting John Woo styles, and about as accurate to boot.

This illustrates perfectly how you can't hit a damnable thing with FA-Off and fixed weapons - If pitch, roll and yaw were auto corrected it'd be a different story.

I went for the last option because there is no "On, but off in fights/landing". I don't really see why you'd only turn it off at the times you are travelling in a straight line anyway...

I just use FAoff to get sights on a target or break turning fights, and to make landing more 'interesting' sometimes. I was originally interested in learning to fly properly with FAoff, but once I realised we are still subject to sort-of-jet-fighter physics even with it off, I stopped caring. Flying with six degrees of freedom, like in Orbiter or Kerbals, is interesting, learning to manage magical speed limits and turn rate limits is not.

I went for the last option because flight assist was brilliant in the testing and now it's boring. Toggle on toggle off and no real umph!
