Some of these you'll know, maybe all of them. But if you don't, they might help you.
I wish I'd known them when I started, and many I've only discovered recently
1) Scooping every star
As soon as you get out of your stock sidewinder, buy a fuel scoop (if not before). The cost of fuel, especially on larger ships, adds up REALLY fast. Also, you'll be able to make longer trips if you fill up as you go. BE WARNED: some stars you CAN NOT scoop. Always ensure you have enough to jump out before you jump in.
2) Trading between safe places
You don't need to be a trader to trade. You don't even need a pen and pad and hours of planning. If you're going to another station somewhere else and you're not stopping to fight along the way, take some stuff with you. Simply mouse over a commodity in the market, and check the "imported to" destination. If it's where you're going, you'll make money on it. It may only be a few thou, but that adds up very fast.
3) Mining tips
If you want to mine
a) basically, buy a mining laser (just a basic one, not an expensive one), a refinery (the best you can afford) and some cargo space (duh)
b) save yourself an enormous amount of time by watching no other videos than this one: Advanced Mining.
4) Route planning map and fastest/economy
Planning a long-distance route IS possible. The limit is 100 ly. A route plan option WILL be available for this, assuming that your jump range isn't ridiculously small. HOWEVER, the map needs a few moments to work out all the permutations. A 100ly destination will take the map 1-2 real-time minutes to plot all the possible routes before allowing you to click "plot route". Also, under "Navigation" in the galaxy map, there is an option to use "economical routes" or "fastest routes" - the latter gets you there with way fewer jumps; the former uses less fuel and more jumps.
5) Module switch off for silent running
If you're like me and you never intend to use silent running for anything other than smuggling (i.e. entering a station without being scanned because your cargo hold is full of slaves and/or stolen goods), then you need to know how to lower your heat. Once you've toggled "silent running" you lose SOME modules. BUT, if you go into your module page (right hand UI, default 4) you can turn off more. For example, Cargo Hatch and Power Distributor are not essential. Turning off Life Support puts you onto Oxygen - so what, when you'll be landing in 42 seconds anyway? Turn them all off BEFORE you go silent running, then you'll heat up a LOT slower. No need for silly heat sinks.
6) Bounty hunt? Look for alliance/empire/fed in proximity
Bounties come in three flavours: Empire, Federation, Alliance. Find an Anarchy system in easy range of all three of these alleigances to maximise ease of claiming profits and minimize downtime.
7) In SC, aligning station to planet
It takes a LOT longer to fly around a station because you are no where near the entrance then it does to do this:
Stations face the planets they orbit. As you approach in SC (at 75% throttle to avoid fly-over), fly so that you end up approaching the station with the planet directly behind you. This may result in you slowing down slightly as you fly past/around the planet, but it's a LOT faster than flying all the way around a station on normal thrusters.
8) "Eject cargo" binding
If you can't think of a reason why you would ever want to eject all your cargo at the push of a button, find and un-bind this sucker before you press it accidentally, in a station, full of rare goods. Oops. Avoid.
I hope some of these help some of you. If you have any tips you've picked up please post them in this thread.
Thank you!
