please don't confuse PvPers with griefers

I don't think so, nope. That would be Bounty Hunting and I would encourage that. I don't thing there is "hate" towards PvP... it's just against mindlessly destroying newer players just because.

Well I think what they should had done with ship colours, green should mean new player. You can still kill it but if you do a hefty bounty is attributed to you. After a week of play your ship turn orange and is up for shooting without protection. It is up to the new player to get combat ready through the combat scenarios within that time but that will go against the cut-throat paradigm.
That's the best I can do New players. :)

That could be a good thing. Hell... it shouldn't break the immersion any more than the hollow scanner indicator does.

It's pretty obvious that a bunch of narrow minded kids are trying to take over the open part of the game.

Hopefully they will all migrate to iron man mode if it turns up and let the more traditional and mature players enjoy the game the way it was envisioned by the creators. Someone aught to put a montage together of all the times DB says that the game isn't a PvP game though it will happen on rare occasion. There are hours of video diaries and interviews where he states it quite regularly.

the hate mails and negative rep i got implies the opposite.
i am a regular bounty hunter in game, all that i have done is speaking out about my support for pvp on the forums a few times,
i have never felt this unwelcome in a game ever.

At the same time, ED is being touted as a cutthroat universe, an open world sandbox, play it how you want!

I think we need to accept some players like the challenge of pvp, and others don't. Maybe what FD could do is scrap solo and group, and turn into in PVE, then PVPers and PVErs can all be happy:) yeah! I doubt it lol.

Speaking of griefing. Apparently some of them like to visit threads just to give negative rep to people they don't agree with. Without even taking part in the discussion, not a single post on the thread. Kind of sad that some people seem to find pleasure in abusing things like that. Especially something like post #183. Not my last post, one that I can see a touchy person that fits the category possibly getting their pants in a twist over.

Most of us older gamers have a pretty good handle on the type of people that are into the griefing business. Just feel sorry for them and do your best to avoid them.

I'm sorry to hear that. I avoid PvP at all cost because I know my limitations, but I still play OPEN because that's how it's supposed to be. I am supposed to be interdicted and pirated (otherwise NPCs wouldn't do it), and I have to try and learn how to deal with that. THAT for me is the nature of the game. There has to be balance on how much piracy is encouraged or not. Attacking other players cannot be without risks, and as much as I have to assess whether a trading run is worth the risk, a pirate should have to ponder whether interdicting and attacking me serves a purpose at all and is worth the chance of hefty fines or even federal prosecution.

This is probably nuts but maybe a percentage of the remaining cargo (is cargo scoopable after the trader is destroyed?) proportional to the difference in status between players should be lost after the attacked player is destroyed. That would discourage huge disparities between prey and pirate.

Personally that would suit me just fine. ED isn't a game that I enjoy PvP in. I play a dedicated PvP with more sophisticated FM/DM and PvP oriented scoring for that.

Elite is more of a space trading and exploration rpg for me and it saddens me that I feel the need to play in a mode that makes it extremely rare that I see another player. I don't even fight with NPC's much. Probably about 80 NPC kills in the last 6 months, most in the first couple of weeks. I spent several weeks in a hauler and viper with no shields or weapons until player interdiction was implemented.

maybe they just don't like your creepy picture, funny you say they've got their pants in a twist yet you bothered to look into their posting history...

If you don't really get negative rep your at least going to be curious. As far as the avatar goes, It's a loosely painted self portrait in oils I did. Unfortunately it doesn't scale down from 7"x5" canvas to 8bit thumbnail size very well.

Its sad that you're so risk adverse that the small chance of actually be caught and killed by a player and losing 5% of your ships value in credits is enough to make you deny yourself the pleasure of meeting players that for the most part won't actually try and kill you.

I lost enough time taking risks in the beta. There was a time when the game would crash to desktop when you landed on a pad. The loitering warning would compress into a few seconds, the docking bay you landed on would open and another ship came out killing you, or the space station would simply disappear and you would die. Actually taking off and landing was extremely risky and that was before you got to the pythons hanging outside killing everyone.

I play War Thunder for PvP, it's much more satisfying and sophisticated if you play Arcade Battles with joystick. Maybe you should try it, it's MUCH more satisfying combat if you have the perseverance to learn to fight with a joystick against 21st century fly by wire mouse users. That put's you at a HUGE disadvantage but also gives you a great sense of achievement when you do well.

ED doesn't have the best combat, the person with the ship advantage that shoots first will usually win if they are fairly evenly matched with skill. I play ED for the great tour, wandering around the galaxy and just enjoying the flying, not the combat.

Maybe you should try War Thunder, it would probably be your thing if you like fast paced team based PvP, 5 - 12 minute battles with several respawns. You don't have the risk of losing hours or days of progress, but you do have the risk of being one shot killed, or having your control surfaces damaged enough that flying the plane becomes a challenge let alone combat.

This game needs more griefers!

I am following the "griefer" discussion in this forum and I am amazed at the arguments put forth. "PvPers are forcing their will on others", "your enjoyment is not mine enjoyment, you're forcing me!", "decent people will always hate crimimals, deal with it".. YIKES!

We're talking here about a space game, not about sexual assault for God's sakes, but reading this forum one could think it's a self-help group for abuse victims. All this whining about "griefers" makes me nauseous.

I am not a "griefer" myself, but griefers are absolutely needed in a game like this. They are the ones who make the game world interesting and challenging. The NPCs are of no real threat. Do you really want just to ferry goods between the stars without any danger? This game currently offers less gameplay features than Frontier: Elite 2 did. Removing danger from it would make it boring very fast (it's not like you can build stations or something with all that money, just upgrading your ship slightly). Frankly, I am dissapointed that huge portions of the Elite community are such whiners. The game is called ELITE DANGEROUS. It's predecessors were called FRONTIER. Yet there is not much of a frontier spirit, nor eliteness nor danger currently there. The huge game world and all the instancing make encounters between humans rare enough already, being able to avoid them altogether would be a real loss.

I thought with the player base being older, the players would be carved out of a different wood than most online players (given how much more harder games were in the 80s and 90s) but I guess I was wrong about that.

Seriously, what do you guys want? This game is about the conquest of space, about taming the frontier. Dangers and bandits included! You want to be safe? Well, there are far better ways for that: Fly in groups, "state owned" (fed, empire, alliance) ferry-ships armed to teeth that fly between the populated systems and to which players could attach to, clans that provide protection in the wilderness in exchange for credits etc. There would be many creative ways to provide certain protection.

A truly dangerous world full of griefers where you need allies and the occasional cavalry to survive in would be SO MUCH MORE FUN than the sterile carebear environment so many seem to want (don't you have the solo mode for that already?).

There's a reason why EVE is going strong for over a decade now, because they got it that a sterile safe space is no fun in the long run.

What do you peope want? Elite Dangerous or Space Truck Simulator 3300?

Given the structure of the game (open and solo) no commander has any right to complain about players who attack them. Calling such commanders "griefers" is disgraceful in my view.

I have never attacked a player and normally play solo.

I don't even care to read what you just typed here. The two are the same and Frontier did a good job at making both of them whine here on forums basically non stop :)

Griefers are never welcome.
Pirates are.
People who decide to attack you for kicks are also allowed, but much less welcome.
None of which equals griefing.
