Lights - Um... Has anyone found a use for them?

So as the title says really...

Anyone found a use for them?

Stupid me was in a dark system in the shadow of an eclipse trying to land on a poorly illuminated outpost...

The people in the outpost must have thought I was Santa! I was flicking my lights on and off but it made no difference, I could not see anything but found the landing pad lights and gingerly made my way to the pad without hitting any part of the 'hidden' outpost.

When I was 30 foot from the pad I got a dull glow from the lights....

So... what are they for?

Only thing I can think of is a sense of scale, like when mining. If you can see the lights, you're CLOSE.

You can use them to explore black holes but you need to get veeeeeery close

They came in very handy when I dropped my keys on the landing pad.... thank god for headlamps.

Mining, they help immensely, reflecting off the ore chunks you chipped loose.

For other people, or for illumination in the eclipse but they're pretty bad at distance ...

I used them briefly for looking around one of the space wrecks after picking up a black box

Yep, I've used them for mining in conjunction with the radar, particularly in far out belts where it is dark!

When I feel like RPing I have a macro that flashes the lights constantly for when docking

Really? I got my antique mag light out and it lit up the place!

Turning them on is part of my routine when I approach a station. I guess in multiplayer it helps people seeing you going in or coming out through the letterbox. When I find a derelict ship in deep space, I turn them on to inspect it. It's useful for mining as it tells you when your mining laser is in range. Finally, I turn them on when I scoop cargo in space, it makes the canisters a little more visible.

The game could do without them, but I'm all for additional controls over my ship!

Usually if I can see my light when I'm mining, it means I'm going to be dead in about 1.5 seconds

I have used them for lighting up the frags when mining, flashing at a friend and to light up wrecks.
