Would you like ED as much as you do now...

...If you knew that no further work, other than bug fixing was to be done for it?

This is a question that i was asking myself while reading the user reviews on Metacritic. In my mind ED is a solid 8, but in truth, it's a solid 8 for me because i am excited about planetary landings, passenger/tourist missions, more ships, the 'transmission not sent' bug being fixed, maybe npc's at stations with more character, and then if i ask myself that question i have to say, what do i have now?

Well right now i have addictive mission running, a giant, beautiful galaxy, a genuine feeling of being in a real ship and a feeling of wonder as i travel through space. I have those things, but i'm infuriatingly aware of what the game seems to be lacking too. I'm always passing planets thinking, i want to go down through the atmosphere and burst through the raining, stormy clouds, and land on a hill, and just get out and enjoy the view. I go to stations and i wish for faces, for some sort of roleplay effect to give these places some more character. And i wish my messages would actually be received by my friends, but that's just a nasty bug.

ED is the first game for me where what is not there is as important as what is there, so for me the answer to the title question is no, i love the future ED more than what i currently have, and i see the current game through rose-tinted specs because of it. I can't ever remember hoping so much that a game will have more added to it, actually kerbal Space program is the only other one, i hope they go on getting better and having things added for a long time.

I for one love it already. I'm really enjoying flying around, selling things, shooting dodgy people at nav beacons, and even mining when I feel like relaxing a bit. With a few more bug fixes elite is already great for me, landing on planets and all that will just be a nice bonus.

Yeah I would. The best part for me is flying around the galaxy in my ship exploring new systems. It just scratches an itch I've had ever since my first telescope on my 8th birthday :)

Absolutely not. The game currently lacks any sort of challenge. For me it's an absolute deal breaker. When I can kill python in my eagle without too much hassle, something is very wrong.

Definitely but Im taking my time, exploring this gigantic galaxy, trading, and doing superficial stuff. Once I feel Im financially stable enough Ill start delving into faction reputation and seeing what kind of influence I can have on the world around me, maybe join a group with some political goals... the possibilities are mind blowing and I feel like we are barely scratching the surface of whats possible even now before they expand on this magnificent foundation they've built. I haven't been this excited about the long term potential of a game in a long, long time.

So if you were brutally honest, say you've had the game for a year, with no further improvements from now, and none on the horizon, what score would you truthfully give it just as it stands?

If it got 'locked down' and no further features were in line, then I'd just stop playing and move on to other things.

Though I have to add, planetary landing really doesn't matter to me; I want more space-based stuff and variance.

No, because I expect the last few annoying bugs to be worked out.

However, if I make the assumption that the bugs will be patched:

Yes! Even if they don't deliver any more new features, this game is pretty good, and quite enjoyable. It's certainly occupying me enough to keep me away from AAA titles that I've already paid for!

If this was it, then no I would not like it as much. What's here has kept me enterained for a good bunch of hours while I anxiously await new content and features.

If this were it, well, I'd be going off to something else soon with a sad sigh and bitter disappointment.

Nah, I wouldn't. I'm not sure if I LOVE it right now, just kinda okay with it - better of two evils (WOW being an alternative atm).
Every branch of the game feels short per say, by that take a look at a centerpiece of the game - Galactic Factions.

You bounty hunt/mission, get into Sol, become Allied with Federation/Gain ranks and...stops.
Trading, you find lucrative runs, buy and sell, profit, profit, profit, buy a new ship, profit, profit, buy another upgrade, profit..stops.
There's nothing at the end of the tunnel for each element of the game, which is okay for now, but I expect to see a larger player drop off if the beginning of 2015 isn't strong for FD.

Yeah but I know that's not the case. [metacritic=so what, who?]. It's like saying If you knew that David Braben wore green pants on a tuesday would you have bought roses on a wednesday.

Get a grip.

Yes, I've had my money's worth already. Which is ultimately the only test that really matters. Been playing this as my main game since the end of September (so nearly three months), and paid the original £20 kickstarter level plus the £15 Beta access deal About AUD$70. But even if I'd paid the full £50 Beta access, it easily meets my entertainment rule of thumb of $1 per hour.

I'm likely to dial that back a bit soon - but since there's no sub I'll happily jump in and out as I feel like it.

Worth noting that player drop off isn't going to be as big a deal here as it is for something like WoW or EVE. People have already paid their money and the game really doesn't rely on player numbers or density. FD will work on a content release, and sell that and bring players back.

I got in the game with hope of future plan coming to fruition and if i was told "it's the end" i would not be happy(it's not though). But if i had discovered the game and at that time there was no future plan but what we have now i would still 100% joined and be as happy with it as i am now. The game is great now, need polishing everywhere but it's no big deal for me.

Don't put too much hope in planetary landing, as of right now i can only see it as a diversion to the gameplay/core of the game, fun from time to time maybe but not something that will take a lot of your time off whatever you are doing already. Planetary landing should only be available to super big ship who can haul a lot of cargo and luxury passenger ship. Don't make sense to send my eagle or cobra on a 15 minutes drop to a planet. Planet should be open to all ship but as sightseeing not mission imo.

Unless, super far out system without any orbital station could sometimes have a station on the ground and it would force you to land to refuel/rearm and maybe even pick some mission. These would feel lost and maybe even barren, you are not upgrading your ship there thats for sure.

Good question. For me my positive view of the game is that i see it's a good solid base which is going to be built on. However if this was it then I'd say it was ok rather than great as at the moment it lacks Classic Ships, mission diversity is poor, exploration is shallow as is the story line. Systems need a look at so some are truely dangerous etc.

I'm confident those issues will be addressed and I'm excited about the planned expansions.

Short answer yes.

Longer answer :- I am thinking of quitting my current mmo and subscription as I have not touched it since beta 2 landed, I have loads of games sitting here and on steam which I have not touched either. Does this answer your question?

I'm enjoying the game that we have now, but it won't keep me entertained indefinently, i really do want the planet landings and am really looking forward to the missing parts of the DDF coming as and when.

If FD can keep up a trickle of expansion through next year (ships, wings, mission additions etc) then I'll be very happy, with a greater expansion (planet landing or first person) in a year or so, then we really will have a great game in our hands, one that can really carry the Elite badge... at the moment, its Competent.
